Hi all,

I have an 15" Aluminium Powerbook which according to my manual has both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800.

I have recently purchased an old Dual 2.0Ghz Power Mac which also has a Firewire 800 port.

I would like to backup my Powerbook to a partition on the Power Mac. Since I will be backing up approximately 90Gb I figured Firewire 800 is the way to go.

Firstly, am I correct in assuming backing up 90Gb via Firewire will be considerably faster than 800, in otherwords noticeable?

Secondly if Firewire 800 is the way to go can someone tell me whether I need to purchase a Firewire 800 6 pin or 9 pin cable?

I have had a look in my manuals and cannot see which type I have. The Powerbook and Power Mac both have the same sort of square connection which is different to the rectangular ones I have been using for Firewire 400.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards

Firewire 800 is 9 pin. Firewire 400 is 6 pin. The connector for FW800 is in a squarish shape, it's to the left of the ethernet connector on an Al PowerBook.

To get the most juice for backing up between two FW800-equiped Macs, simply get a 9-pin to 9-pin FireWire 800 cable.

I have a dual PowerMac G4 with FireWire 800 port and a 250GB LaCie Triple Interface ext. HDD, backing up 120GB of data with SuperDuper! takes about 2 hrs.

That doesn't seem right... 120GB in 2 hours is about 17MBps or 137Mbps... it should easily be three times as fast.

Oh, it's a LaCie; no wonder.
