Someone has just said that they can't have access to their ISP via the modem, and still be connected to their local IP network. I can't try this at the moment as I have no access to a Mac, so I thought I might get a quick definitive answer here.

Sure you can (if I understand what you are asking). I do it with the help of IPNetRouter. In fact, I am accessing another Mac (AppleTalk), a PC (using Dave) and surfing on the net, simultaneously

And I imagine there are other ways to do this.
