anyone try those apple HD clips, I tried to wat ch the batman begins clip and it was just choppy as hell. I bought the new computer (imac g5 20 1.8) this year hoping to solve such problems, wtf. Quicktime is notorious for choking on large video files. If they updatre VLC to accomodate these files im sure theyll run fine. Otherwise is my new computer obsolete already?!

The Batman Begins 720p video, along with all the rest, runs just about okay for me on the 1.42Ghz mini. I'm obviously not doing anything else at the same time, and the CPU is maxed out, but it does run with hardly any noticeable frame drops.

It seemed much better if I let it all download first, even though it was streaming fast enough. I'm currently hoping it's a bit better for me under Tiger (still on Panther here), but I think it's already pushing the mini boundaries.

Not able to play on my machine, but that's cause my machine really is obsolete.
Shouldn't be a problem for you since I (if my memory is any good) thought
HD required 96 MB/sec transfer rate.

May I suggest:
* get 1 more 512 RAM ? (512 should be considered obsolete IHMO)
* set connection setting 1 level lower.
* check your internet connection performance.
* would say upgrade your vid card, but you can't on the iMac.

Hope this doesn't happen on the new iMac comin.

The 1080p BBC clip plays smoothly except at ~40sec in where the camera hovers over the coast. It seems there is a sudden spike in the bitrate at that exact moment, hmm...

Plays fine on my dual 867 G4. The iMac should do just fine.

There's a difference between "just fine" and perfect 24/24 or 30/30 frame-rate

If there are frame-drops anywhere in the movie, it's not really good enough.

I tried the NASA trailer because it was 30fps. It was watchable on my iMac G5 1.6ghz but I know it dropped frames ~20% of the time to around 20 fps. It choked on 1080 as expected.

I've tried a lot of Hd trailers from Apple on my iMac G5 1.8, and they all plays flawlessly (if there was some frame drop I didn't notice it) in fullscreen or window.... I've also tried the 1080 ones, that ones really chocke... but i was expecting it... Maybe there's something wrong in your configuration.....

720p is HD at up to 1280x720, and obviously is MUCH MUCH better than DVD (which is only 720x480).

1080i is even higher resolution, at up to 1920x1080.

The drives might have a decoder chip to handle it.

Mac mini 1.42/512. The first time I tried to play a QT7 HD trailer, it was not watch-able on my mini. I shut down some apps and saw little improvement. After a restart, it played them beautifully, but the bad behavior when trying to view a saved HD trailer returns after a several hours of browsing, iTunes, and misc apps use. A restart always restores the machine to snappiness and HD capability. After I shut down some apps, I don't see anything out of the ordinary hogging the ram or CPU. I run the cron scripts from the terminal occasionally.

I had the same scenario on the Trent Reznor GarageBand file that he put out for GarageBand users. It would not play correctly until after a Restart. The NIN file works great when the machine is happy. What am I missing or what is slowing down my machine?
