Canon Optura 30
iLife '05
Panther
iMac G5 (756MB RAM)
connected via FireWire
Have successfully imported numerous times.

When I plug everything up, iMovie will control the camera, but won't import. Just blue screen.
Then it starts acting squirrely (the play/stop/ff/rew buttons fade in and out).

I've checked the date/time on the camera, zapped the PRAM, quadruple checked all of the connections and still no go.

I tried importing the same footage with the same camera with the same firewire cable on a friend's iBook purchased last month, and it works fine.

Do I need to re-install iMovie? If so, what's the general procedure?

I've got a three-month old son who's screaming for more video to be taken of him, so any help is appreciated.

Brian

I'm pretty sure you can re-install iMovie by deselecting it when you customize your OS X installation. Pop your Tiger DVD in the drive and go through the steps.

Sorry Memphis_Mac after reading your post again this may not be the answer you are looking for as you didn't say you where using iMovie HD.

I have just had the same problem as you Memphis_Mac,
my soloution (someone elses actually) was to re name iMovie HD to iMovie HD 5 (or move from applications folder) & re-install iMovie 4 as this imports from my Canon camcorder with no problem. Once imported just open the imported movie in iMovie HD and edit.

I used Pacifist to install only Imovie from my software disc.

I just re-installed off the iLife '05 CD and it's doing the same thing. Argh!

SOLUTION FOUND: Someone suggested opening GarageBand and typing in a few notes, and then re-opening iMovie.

It works. GarageBand opened to a file that was partially labeled "import" and was getting some weird feedback, presumably from the camera's microphone. I closed that file, opened a new one, hit a few notes on the musical keyboard and closed that file.

I opened iMovie and camera showed up fine and imported perfectly.

Strange...
