Hello all,

I wanted to clean out the extensions, control panels and other misc items in my OS 9 system folder. I'm using OS 9.0.4 on a Pismo G3/500. It's a standard install including Airport stuff for wireless internet. I'm just afraid of screwing things up. I kept searching the forums for some help on this, and I could have sworn there was a thread that someone had made describing each individual extension; some years ago about what could stay and go... I just want to turn off the things I don't use or need. I'd really appreciate any help you guys could provide.

Many thanks in advance,
PSST

You can start by choosing the "Mac OS 9 Base" set. That will load only the system essential extensions.

There used to be a program called Extension Overload that had a complete list of extensions and control panels for OS 9 and what they did. It now seems to have been replaced with a folder called X Overload that is now focused on OS X's Library folders, but also seems to include all the old OS 9 info as well. Unfortunately, it only runs in OS X, so if you're booting OS 9, it won't be useful. If you're just using OS 9 as the Classic environment, it will be fine. It can be found here:

http://www.xoverload.com

There also used to be a competing product to this that listed OS 9 extensions, but I can't remember what it was called anymore.

edit: Now I remember! It was InformINIT:

http://www.informinit.com

edit again: And, it turns out the InformINIT site has a page describing pretty much exactly what you're asking for!

http://homepage.mac.com/frakes/InformINIT/classic.html

not another edit: And, the download link for InformInit seems to be broken. Here's an alternate link that works:

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
