1) BOINC has a new feature where new projects can/will import the teams and their founders. This may even happen for existing projects, I am not sure. In any case, the defaults that will be used, were copied from the teams that exist on SETI@Home. So all new projects will have "hamm" as the founder, and is also missing the country code classification, instead of International. Is this what we want? I looked for a user "hamm" on BOINCstats, and couldn't find an active cruncher with that userid.

The default team for Team MacNN is here:
Team MacNN

2) We have many projects, with many different founders. Do we want to do something about this? Personally, I would like to see the founder for all these under a single person. It would require this person to be a member of all the projects, which could be a problem for closed projects. Thoughts?

'hamm' was the online handle for one of the old MacNN staff members. This was back when Classic SETI was just SETI, and the forum ran on UBB. Year 2000.

wlonh (global forum mod) started Team MacNN. hamm (MacNN staff member) coded our first stats, the original team news page, and founded the SETI team. Misha (MacNN admin) eventually improved the team page HTML into a format that looks much like it does today.

A few years later, after all three of them left MacNN (different times & reasons), I got access to the old page & stats code, and rewrote everything.

At present, none of those three are even listed in the forums - their names vanished in the UBB -> vBB transition, where a lot of older inactive accounts were lost.

This predates most current members of the team. I have chatted with hamm in the past, to my knowledge he has not done any DC since leaving MacNN. We briefly recreated his MacNN email box a few years back, and used it to latch the SETI Classic team password. We'll have to do that again sometime, since the BOINC MacNN doesn't accept the old pass - it looks like Berkeley scrambled the passwords when they transitioned to BOINC.

I've started to assemble the team foundings a couple times, as you can see on the list, but it petered out each time. We've been letting interested members found the teams on each new project, and it hasn't caused any issues yet. Of course, there was that one incident a few years back when The Register's SETI team vanished. Whoever had founded it got pissed (or someone guessed the password) and disbanded the team.

Eventually, I'll have to investigate the BOINC option to switch the founding account. If they're cloning from SETI, that would be the place to start.

Sorta. They already cloned SETI to this Berkeley Teams site:

Team MacNN

From there, it will be cloned out to all new projects. FWIW, I clicked "Initiate transfer" at the teams site. In about 7 weeks, it should transfer to me, if it works. No one is sure it *will* work. At that point, I can transfer it to anyone you like.

How about this: I do the same for all the rest of the hamm projects. And by Christmas we can get organized, if that is what you want to do. Also, what this these id? Are they still active? Or should we initiate transfer on them too?

I haven't investigated the founder transfer option yet, so I'll have to take your word on the details. Presumably, I could do the transfers myself, but do they require active crunching in each project? My systems are PPC, though the team servers are Debian on AMD.

The founder you list, with the specs name, is unfamiliar. If it's an active team member, it might be best if I did the transfer later, along with some legit-sounding message. Does the founder-transfer option allow you to add some text? I believe it fires off an email to the previous founder to obtain any objections, some attached text in that email would be helpful.

Note that I'm preoccupied with work through the end of the week, so I won't be able to do anything on this before the weekend. If the transfers look workable, I'll certainly contact our regular member founders to get their OK before doing anything. Most of the names listed are familiar.

fyi, if you count the non-BOINC projects:
reader50; Distributed Folding; Inactive
scott; Genome@home; Retired
team; RC5-72; Production

I don't recall the other associations offhand. The RC5 situation is perhaps the best, it is assigned to the team email account. If I went postal and vanished to the big house, then Scott could cover. Or vice versa if Scott ever tries that bank job. I don't recall exactly how we set that up, we might have created a new team member and crunched one unit on it.

It has been about 7 weeks, still no change on the founder front at SETI.

It looks like zombie requested the transfer on the old team tonight. It shows requested tonight, which blocks anyone else from trying until/unless hamm declines (which won't happen).

The "master MacNN 155" team shows successful transfer to zombie. So apparently the process works. It takes 60 days, unless the old founder declines.

It might be best if I consolidated them eventually, but zombie is a long-term team member with a fine record, who crunches way more than I do lately ever. It helps to have a farm.

Having the team founder account is useful for a few purposes. Posting a team logo, kicking cheaters off a team, or releasing members who wish to leave with their full credits. I've long felt that we should not hold members' credits hostage, even though the system currently encourages that.

We've also considered using the founder account to send an email to inactive members ... but I've been against doing that too. Crunching is a volunteer effort, and those who drift away shouldn't be spammed by us.

Yep, the transfer finally went through at SETI. I also finally got founder for the master team at the BOINC site, and a couple of the newer projects. So at least no new project will be created with a founder that doesn't exist. I am more than happy to transfer these any any others to someone else. But I think we need a real plan, and get all the rest of the team mods and other founders on board.

Well I'm still around some of the time but not currently crunching. Haven't settled into a new home since my return from Philippines. Just drop me a note and let me know the plan when ready. My e-mail hasn't changed. Having to look for a new job but may start crunching again once I get settled again.

zombie67 has been transferring teams to me, per this thread. His last few have proven to be problematic for various reasons.

I need to add a lot more links, and the (status) info may no longer be correct for all projects. About the remaining founders:

Shaktai, I've listed you as "good hands" because you're a long time member, and are on the boards today. It's fine if you keep the founderships, but I can request them if you like.

The other guys ... I recall most of them, but haven't seen them posting recently. I need to try and contact them, then request founder transfer if they don't respond.

I am no longer a team member, so pay no attention to me, but the founder-ship should all be under one userid for the team, IMO. Anyone who has it, should move it to reader50. That way, if any more of us move in the future, it will make things a lot easier on the team.

Update on SETI@home

The founder transfer was tripping up on a Berkeley code glitch. I can't tell which bug was biting us - there may have been two. After the third (fourth?) transfer request timed out yesterday and vanished without working, enough was enough.

I signed up to my old Earthlink account this morning, and approved a new transfer request. We gave Berkeley 6+ months and a bug report; nothing came of it. A few bucks to earthlink and it was all done in less than an hour.

We have foundership, finally.

I'll tidy a few things up this week, like the odd html in our team banner. The reanimated Earthlink account will get dropped within a month or two, after I check if any other old registrations need updating. And my opinion of the Berkeley folks has not been improved by all this.

Now we just need to update the founder list and see where we stand.
