There are a few post around the net stating that the newly announced SuperDrive won't work with any other Mac, other than the MacBook Air. I am wondering what makes the MBA so special, or the new SuperDrive so crappy that this had to happen. Or is this even true?

What do you guys think? Would this drive work with a MacBook Pro, or a MacBook?

Since the MBA superdrive is completely USB bus powered, I read somewhere (Andy Ihnatko's interview at MacObserver, I think) that there is more current on the MBA USB port than on other machine's USB. If it is true that it wouldn't work with other machines, I think it still would work with either a hub or a USB Y adaptor in order to get more power to the drive.

i have spoken with two apple employees, and they have both said that the superdrive will only work with the MBA. They are unsure why. it's either a software or a hardware thing.

There are other USB powered DVD burners, but I think they're slower. My guess is the MacBook Air can provide non-standard levels of power over USB.
