StubHub, which recently announced support for iOS 6's
Passbook feature for iPhones, is expanding its offerings into e-tickets for college football games hosted at four US colleges, the first batch of what the company says will be more than 60 partner teams in the near future, including professional sports teams. The integration lets fans add e-tickets purchased through the
StubHub Tickets app to Passbook for automatic display when they arrive at the venue. The e-tickets will be available for the next home games for each school.
The four schools to be the first to support Passbook integration are the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas, the University of North Carolina and Perdue University. Fans can use the StubHub app to discover when games are upcoming, purchase the tickets and use Passbook to display them automatically as they approach the stadium, making the experience completely end-to-end mobile. The Passbook tickets also allow buyers to see where their seats are located and other information about the upcoming game.
University of Tennessee Volunteer fans will be among the first to give the technology a try on October 20 as the team faces off against the University of Alabama. University of Texas fans can use e-tickets for their first home game on the same day, when the Longhorns take on the Baylor Bears. Tar Heels fans can use Passbook to get into their home game on October 27 against the NC State Wolfpack, and the Perdue Boilermakers will offer e-tickets for its upcoming home game against Penn State on November 3.
UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said that the mobile delivery option will let fans "redeem tickets to our events in a truly seamless process," while his counterpart at the University of Texas, DeLoss Dodds, said the system would make tickets to Longhorn events "even more accessible." StubHub has already implemented e-ticketing with pro teams such as the San Francisco Giants and four of the playoff Major League Baseball teams, the latter of which has seen
strong response to Passbook compatibility.
