Within 3 minutes of installing 2.1 on my iPhone I already found a serious bug on my 3G iPhone which also happens on my friends 2.5G iPhone running 2.1
Going into setting/mail,contacts,calenders scroll to the bottom.... CRASH.
What in the world is going on with quality control over at Apple? Seriously if this is happening to the only 2 iPhones I have seen that has upgraded it must be widespread.
Can't wait for 2.1.1 in a few days.

I couldn't replicate this. I'll try on my gf's iPhone later though.

I wonder what the circumstances are that it needs to crash. I have one IMAP account and a @Me account set in it. My friend only has one IMAP account.

Maybe it's the @Me? I have two POP and one IMAP.
Try disabling @Me for a test.

Well since my friends phone doesn't have @me that can't be the cause.

Okay then. The obvious question is: did you shutdown, reboot, & try again?

wow, I'm running out of ideas... except a full restore from backup and trying again.
But I can't imagine why both phones would do this. My last resort would be to call Apple or go to the store.

Another bug: Safari's History still can't be cleared.
The clear History button is just for show, apparently.
Edit: forgive my confusion with the History - what I'm trying to clear is the l o n g list of sites that pop up during auto-completion.

I had the exact same problem as the OP, except with the iTunes Store. I just rebooted and it was gone. My Safari history clears fine.

Can't confirm. Do you have some odd characters in your default calendar (or any calendar) by any chance?
You might want to try and recreate your calendars if that fails. Sounds like something's corrupt somewhere.
First try to reset the phone from mobileme, then try resetting the data on mobileme with fresh data from your computer, then reset iPhone with that.

This is an isolated issue to your phone. who knows what you have installed on there. i wouldn't classify this as a bug. bugs affect many people. stop wasting our time.

I knows what's installed on my iPhone? Well I do, and a fresh install of 2.1 with ZERO 3rd party hacks AND no jailbreaking this bug happens.
Also if you knew how to read and not just bitch you would see that it is happening to 2 other people I know one with 3G and the other with 2.5. So out of the 3 people I know who upgraded ALL THREE have this bug. Is that what you call isolated because you and a couple other people here don't have this bug?
Do you ever stop to think that perhaps what country we live in matters or what other situation might cause this?
If you don't have any helpful information to contribute take a hike.

If it's isolated, why would it affect many people? The OP isn't wasting anyone's time, except for obviously yours. And you clicked on the thread. You wasted your own time.

You have a backup that iTunes created, yes?
What about restoring without using the backup, so that you get a blank phone with no data, no settings other than default? Does it happen in that case? Add calendars back, try again.
Add email account back, try again.
Then, when ready, you can restore with backup.

How would you do this? In my experience when you reconnect the iPhone a new backup is saved and the old one overwritten. So how do you go through all those steps w/o losing the original backup?

I love the "it doesn't happen to me so it must be your fault" responses whenever anyone has a problem with their phone. Happens on another forum I'm on too. It's as if there can't be a bug that affects only some of the users and not all of them.

Typically, a "bug" IS something that affects ALL users.

If this was a "bug" in the system software then it should affect everyone but I suspect that the OP has some third party software that is loading in the preferences screen and causing a crash from corrupt settings or something like that. Because the rest of us do not have that app installed, we will not experience the crash.

The trick here is to identify the set of circumstances that actually causes the problem, rather than just saying "Yeah, I have it" and "nothing here." Perhaps posting a complete list of apps you have on board that didn't come with the phone (and of course any standard apps that you have somehow removed), and a situation/event/circumstance where this issue occurred. Also, has anyone even tried to contact Apple about this—formally?

I can't get that crash, but I'm getting the "lots of audiobooks" bug that seems to be well-replicated on Apple's discussion forums: If you have 10 (or so) or more audiobooks, the iPod just drops you back to the main screen if you try to play one.

Unless it's a bug in the system that requires a certain preference to be on (or any number of other variables). Just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it's not a bug because you may not have what's required to replicate it.

I have something similar as the OP. I was looking through my mail accounts (@Me), then Account Info then Advanced when it crashes, going back to the main screen. However, it doesn't seem to do it every single time, just to make things interesting. Sometimes other accounts (Comcast) crash as well, but it's not 100% consistent.

I can verify that this "major bug" does NOT occur on my 3G or my wife's 2.5 both freshly updated to 2.1.

The stuff down there is your timezone setting and your default calendar. Perhaps it's some character(s) in your default calendar name, as someone suggested, or it has to do with your timezone setting. That latter would make sense if local friends you've asked all report the same issue, while others on this forum don't.
That said, my girlfriend's original iPhone and my 3G, both running 2.1, do not crash.

They didn't work and when I say fresh 2.1 install I literally mean hitting update unplug the iphone and crash happens.

What about testing my tips for odd calendar character / corrupt data?
And did you have any data on the phone from before the update or was it literally a "fresh" update, ie wipe and install? Because if it wasn't then a third party app might still be the cause. I'd check the calendar name / data first though.

I don't see why you guys are saying that. Remember the Mac OS update (10.1.something, I think) that would delete external hard drives? That didn't affect me, but it was most certainly a bug.

That was an iTunes update (2.0), and it was not a bug, but a catastrophe. A bug will inconvenience you. Someone forgetting quotation marks and having all similarly named drives blown away? That's not an inconvenience. That's a show stopper.

Yeah, but it wasn't something that affected *ALL* users. There is nothing about a software bug (which is really all that was, just a very very bad one) that says it has to affect everyone.

Maybe not. But the OP cried out "Found a MAJOR bug in iPhone 2.1". The fact that it only happens to a few people with specific settings disqualifies it as a MAJOR bug. Plus, it only appears to crash when scrolling to the bottom of a single settings panel. I would hardly consider that MAJOR either.
