Have a look in your manual or on apple support pages, there should be some way to eject media that wouldn't eject the "normal" way. Some key sequence on boot-up or some small button to press with a paper clip, I am not sure which one'll work for you, but the solution is either in the manual or on apple's support website. Good luck!
Try this apple support page

Restart with the mouse button (or trackpad) pressed down sometimes helps.
As a last resort, I've used this (in the Shell)
Use 'disktools' to eject a CD that seems stuck.
disktool -l
will tell you which disk represents the CD.
disktool -l
*** Unrecognized disk appeared on disk1 ***
*** Unrecognized disk appeared on disk1s1s1 ***
***Disk Appeared ('disk1s1s2',Mountpoint = '/Volumes/Return to Zork', fsType = 'hfs', volName = 'Return to Zork')
...
To eject 'Return to Zork' (disk1) use:
disktool -e disk1
disk1 device will attempt to be ejected ...
***Notifications Complete for type 1
***Disk Unmounted('disk1')
***Disk Unmounted('disk1s1s1')
***Disk Unmounted('disk1s1')
***Responding yes to unmount - disk1s1s2
***Disk Unmounted('disk1s1s2')
***Responding yes to eject - disk1
***Responding yes to eject - disk1s1s1
***Responding yes to eject - disk1s1s2
***Responding yes to eject - disk1s1
***Disk Ejected('disk1')
YMMV

Holding the eject button on restart worked for me but the mouse button didn't when I tried that first. Thanks everyone.

for future reference, since this will happen again:
Here's a few tricks for ejecting recalcitrant CDs:
--Hold down the mouse button while restarting your Mac.
--eject a CD using Open Firmware:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752
--you can add an eject menulet to your menu bar. Go to System/Library/CoreServices/MenuExtras and double-click on the eject menu (this adds the eject option to your menu bar.) If at a later date you decide you don’t want it on your menu bar: You can remove it from the Menubar by holding down the command key and dragging it off.

Thanks for the tip on the MenuExtras...very interesting. Do you know what the Verizon.menu one is for? It didn't do anything on my PowerBook.

no idea what it does, didn't seem to install anything but who knows what's happening behind the scenes? Be very curious to find out why Verizon merits a menulet -- and wherefore?
