I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but from what I can tell, It doesn't seem to make sense for me to buy the macpro with the 8800 from apple. From what I understand, since macmall doesn't have retail stores where I am (NYC), they won't charge me tax so it seems what makes the most sense is to buy a stock machine from them and just buy the card separately from apple. The numbers are below. Am I missing something? or is this the way to go. Plus it seems I'll get my machine sooner which is great since the wait kills me.

FROM APPLE
2999 (8core 2.8 mac pro from apple with 8800)
+251.61 (+ NYC sales tax 8.375%)
=
$3250 (macpro +8800)

FROM MACMALL AND APPLE
2794 (standard config 8core 2.8 mac pro from macmall)
+0 sales tax
+349.00 (8800 from apple)
+29.22 (+ NYC sales tax 8.375%)
=
$3172 (macpro + 2600 + 8800)

Nope, you aren't missing anything except shipping(but MacMall has a mail-in rebate for that). I get all my stuff from MacMall for the reasons you state. I bought a Quad 2.8 from MacMall and they gave me free over night shipping because I needed the computer ASAP. So, I didn't even have to deal with the rebate.

And another minor detail: The built-in 8800 GT will be covered by the Apple warranty and subsequently by AppleCare. If you buy the card as an upgrade separately it will not be covered by AC (although it will come with its own 1 year warranty).

the only thing i would add to that is DON'T buy from macmall, if
you have a problem and need to return it, they are a nightmare to deal with.
buy it from amazon. no tax, free shipping.

actually if I then sell the radeon for ~150, then its like almost getting the 8800 for free vs buying a stock 2.8+tax from the apple store

As somone else posted in another thread, it never makes sense to buy any of the upgrades from Apple unless you simply cannot get them somewhere else.

They charge too much. Buy the base unit and source your upgrades like RAM, hard drives and video cards elsewhere.

For $100. I could buy a 500GB hard disk and put it in my Mac Pro for a total of 720GB. Why would I want to pay apple $250. extra for a Mac Pro with a 500GB hard disk? Similar reasoning goes for the 8800 GT.

Actually, not so much. Video cards aren't as generic as SATA hard disks or DIMMs... they've got to have the proper firmware... and so far, only Apple uses that specific firmware. Sure, you may be able to eventually get a compatible 8800 elsewhere, but I haven't seen 'em yet anywhere at any price. Hard disks and memory are available.

As far as the OP's math goes, it works for him because he's avoiding tax. Me, I live in California where they zing you for sales tax regardless of where the vendor is, so I am actually in better shape buying from Apple.
