I have an LC III running System 7.6, packed with 12MB RAM, and a 120MB Hard Drive (running Norton Double Space, which has cranked the usable area up to nearly 200MB), that was in daily use by me until I got my Beige G3/233 in 1995, and then by my ex until we got her a new iBook last October. It is currently pulling duty as a Fax/Answering Machine.

I got this baby in the summer of 1992 (it was replaced by the LC 575 before I even got it, so you people with back-ordered iMacs can just sit down and shut up), and the only problem it has ever had was the motherboard battery died. I replaced it for about 3 bucks at Radio Shack.

Now that I think about it, Seafirst Bank in the Seattle, WA area was chock-full of original Macs, with weird external hardware to tie into their network. They were bought up by Bank of America, but still retained those things for some time. If they decided to get rid of 'em, there'd be many _hundreds_ getting tossed.

I don't think old 68K machines are practical anymore. Even for simple routing purposes, it's more effective to buy yourself a stand-alone Linksys router for a hundred bucks than wasting the time rigging up an SE/30 with a network card and the software to run an Internet gateway.

Old Mac hardware pisses me off. OS X makes this even worse; my Pismo is almost useless for any intensive work because it doesn't have a G4 processor. On the Mac, hardware is getting outdated faster than ever, and new programs require new hardware. It seems as if I might need to upgrade to a TiBook when they release a new one in July. PC's, however, are lasting a lot longer; a 400-megahertz Pentium II opens and closes folders in Windows XP is very usable for office applications and AIM. The 233-megahertz iMac that was released at just about the same time can't run OS X worth anything (if you can get it to run X at all). Opening an IM window in OS X takes three seconds, but it appears instantaneously on the PC. OS X needs to be streamlined before they start adding more features to bog down my poor old machines. Then again, this might be just the transition from OS 9 to OS X; all the aforementioned Macs run OS 9 perfectly. Alas, last-generation hardware has go sometime.

I have an SE (4mb RAM, internal 40mb HD, external 20mb HD). The external HD is an old 20mb drive mounted in an old smoked herring box with a PC power supply. The 20mb drive has system 6.0.8 and the 40mb drive has system 7.1. Using Startup Disk, I can choose which OS I want. I use it for playing very old games and tinkering. This computer can see most of my network with a few limitations.

The SE is networked to an SE/30 using PhoneNet. The SE/30 (20MB RAM, 330MB HD, ethernet card, system 7.5.5) is also connected to a 4-port ethernet hub. I use Localtalk Bridge to see both networks. I use this computer as a networked floppy drive for my iMac. I also play old games and basic word processing. I ALMOST got an mp3 to play on it using "MpegDec 2.0". Any suggestions?

The hub is also connected to my primary computer, an iMac 266 (256MB Ram, 60GB HD, ext USB 13 GB HD, scanner, printer, Tablet, mp3 player and Zip 100). And a found PC (486-66, 160MB HD, Windows 95) which I rarely use.

I also have an Apple II with dual drive and printer and a Timex/Sinclair (non-Apple) with 16KB memory pack. They both work but I don't use them.

I'm using a Performa 475 to prop up my monitor (it doesn't have the tilt/swivel base) does that count?

In somewhat regular real use I have a PowerBook 5300c with 32MB/2GB, with a PowerCD and/or Color OneScanner hooked up to it's SCSI port.

I've got a PB520 too, but I broke the floppy cable so I can't actually do much with it right now...

My UMAX 603e 200Mhz still works fine. Bought it in 96 or 97 I think, 32 RAM and a whopping 1.3 GB HD.
Now I've got a dual USB iBook, 500 combo. It's a little faster than old Max.

We are using a Mac SE/30 with 4MB ram, and an internal 30MB HD - this puppy has some serious screen burn-in as it has been in use from 9 to 5 since 1987. It currently serves as a terminal for quick access to patient info in my father's Dr's office.

My brother is using my old 7200/90 with 56MB ram and a 500MB HD to surf at slow speeds and email.

Sometimes my girlfriend uses my old Duo/2300 with 16MB ram and a 750MB HD when she is away collecting data in a forest.

Up until a year ago I was using a Mac Plus with 800K and an external floppy drive, which has no hard drive, so I had to boot it up with System 4.2 every time I turned it on. I got it during college in '89, and I was using it for word processing only. I would have kept using it if the screen hadn't died and produced a Mac face with 2 Xs for eyes.

Just an appended note: This machine doesn't get daily use, but is intended as a demonstration of early computer design and 'where it all began' in computer assisted graphic design.

For daily use, I use an 8500 w/g3 400mHz upgrade for a scanning computer, and a 7300/200 as a web/fileserver.

i have a 7500 with a 604 processor on the way- i have already scavenged around for all sorts of extra crap to throw into it. my other supercomputer is a 667 tibook, 48 gig, 768 ram combo drive honey named clyde. heh. my 7500 will be used to run basic programs my tibook can't do in OSX. it's hard for me to stop trying to upgrade the 7500 (and i don't even have it yet!), i find, because i have spent so much time on all of my earlier macs trying to make them faster, larger, etc. the whole point of buying the 7500 was to spend as little as possible to get a workable desktop for my particular needs, and i have to keep stopping myself from buying a new processor card to push it up to a g3, which i *really* don't need, since my tibook does everything else i want it to!!!!

is this some sort of disease? upgradosis? anyone else with this problem?

oh, and to the first poster whose LCIII was replaced before he got it- that happened to me, too! it took forever to get the thing and it ended up costing more than the newer computer. eleven years later, or whatever, and i'm still pissed about it...sort of....

Connect the Apple ][ to the Mac by means of a standard Mac-modem-cable. You only need TXD (pin 2 on a standard DB-25 connector), RXD (pin 3) and GROUND (pin 7). If such a cable doesn't work, then interchange the wires at pins 2 and 3.

My oldest Mac is an SE with 4 Megs RAM and 120 MB Maxtor SCSI HDD running OS 7.0. I actually use it sometimes to check email with Eudora. It does not have enough ram to do the Web though but for email it and even some chat clients it works!

Also in use are a Quadra 700 with 20 Megs RAM and 500Mb HDD and OS 8.1

Powerbook 170 running OS 7.6.1 and 250 MB HDD.

8100/80 with 120 Megs RAM and 2 Gig HDD running Mac OS 8.6 and cracking RC5

8500/120 with 256 Megs RAM and 3 Gigs HDD running Mac OS 8.6. Do video work with it and surf the web and crack RC5.

Had an origional Plus that still worked great but it got lost in my move around 8 months ago.

A PB 520 upgraded with a Newer Technologies 117MHz processor card. Running OS 8 & Word 98, this machine gets booted up twice daily; once when I'm working in the TV satellite truck I operate and again when I get back to the TV station to check my work e-mail and print out truck reports, etc. It's a reliable but somewhat slow machine. It got babied during it's first 6 years of life and now I'm making it see some action! Co-workers are always amazed to see me working on that thing when there is a fast DELL in the next room I could use. Yes, but this one's at my desk and the IT guy can't go in and see where I've been on the web!

Amazingly, apart from high end 3d games, seems to run everything out there. But, outdated for editing home movies, etc.

a powerbook 5300c,
and a 7300/200 (runs BeOS also).

I just can't bring myself to get rid of them. Thats the good thing about Macs. They have such good quality and they still serve a good purpose. It seems that my x86 computers are disposible after a year or two.
I'm waiting for the G5's to come out for my next mac.
