In Jaguar you could network two macs via a firewire cable but it seems that this can't be done in Panther, or at least I can't figure it out, anyone have any ideas?

What are you talking about? Panther (unlike Jag) does IP over FireWire out of the box.

In Jaguar, you had to download beta software from Apple to do IP over FireWire. In Panther, that's already installed. You just add the FireWire as a new interface.

System Prefs -> Network -> Show: Network Port Configurations -> New...

Note that the procedure (other than Jag's requiring separate installation of the IP over FW driver) is identical under Jag and Panther.
