A friend of mine has an iBook thats about 18months old running Mac OSX 10.3.5 and a few days ago the tray loading CDRW drive started acting a bit strange. The tray of the CDRW drive will not stay shut, when you close it is stays shut for about 10 seconds and then pops out again. It does'nt matter if theres any sort of disk in there its just pops right and does'nt register the disk at all. I looked into the tray itself and aprt from being a slight bit dusty it looks just like my own which works fine, I have run tech tool pro on it and disk utility too neither found any problems. Has anyone got any ideas? before I send it to Apple.

There really aren't any utilities to check out an optical drive like this.

Check and see if you have the same problem booted from another OS--reboot into OS 9 if you can, or boot from an external firewire drive.

This will tell you whether it's hardware or software. I'm leaning towards hardware myself--specifically the optical drive.
