Installing right now just for kicks.. if I don't post again... we'll all know why

here's what the installer says before you restart:

This update is for MacBook computers with Intel processors only.

Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.

Note: Print or write down these instructions before you begin the update.

To update the firmware on your Intel-based MacBook:

1. Quit all other open applications.

2. Click Shut Down in the MacBook EFI Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to shut down.

3. Press and hold the power button on your MacBook until the sleep indicator light flashes repeatedly or you hear a long tone, then release the power button.

A status bar indicates the progress of the update.

Important: Do not interrupt the update.

Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook EFI Firmware Update.

4. Click OK, if the firmware is now up-to-date.

If these instructions appear on your screen again, the firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.

I'm OK

FYI, my light began to flash before the long tone came.. I waited it out for the tone just to be safe.

This is what the pre-OS update screen looks like

Made sure I wasn't tempted to hit the power button...

Update took about 1-2min.

edit: just read on macrumors it's only for sr chipsets... can anyone confirm?

So far the thread over there has noted :
1 mbp that lost colour profiles after rebooting
1 person is now able to use boot camp w/ wireless kb with capslock not killing the wireless (?)
1 'reboots are snappier'

my 2.2 SR MBP doesn't see it in software update, and when i download it manually it says it's not needed even though the boot rom version of my MBP is lower than what the updater is supposed to update to.

That happens by design. The flashing LED indicates you are about to flash the firmware.

And what's the deal with all the mentioning of "SR chipsets" in MBPs? I thought we had been over that enough already on this board.

No unfortunately they do not publish any details as a rule, which is too bad and I believe counter-productive.

To that point, if I'm not experiencing any problems then I'll generally hold off for a few weeks to see if the update causes more problems then it fixes. On a rare occasion that is just the case which is why they provide a rollback disc image.

I'm doing a Time Machine backup first, if it breaks, I have an excuse to visit the shiny new Apple store

Edit: Done. Trackpad scrolling seems smoother, if thats what you guys were talking about.

if it doesn't show up when I click on software update, does that mean I already have it? if not, do I need both from that link?

If it doesn't show up, its almost certain that you don't need it. You can't do any harm by downloading and seeing if the MacBook update (first link) will run, if it's not needed for yours it shouldn't run anyway.

I have an original MacBook and haven't applied this update, yet it says I don't need it. How can that be so?

I have a MBP 2.2ghz (boot ROM MBP31.0070.B05), but the installer says I don't need the update although according to the tech not it's not the correct version:

After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:

MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07

weird.

jokell82, What is your Boot ROM now? It seems it only applies to the MacBooks with the identifier of 3,1
pat++, have you missed an update somewhere along the line? Did this new update come up in software update?

the B05 firmware isn't being updated for some reason. It is what shipped on my 2.2MBP from the factory and I've never missed any of the updates.

Boot ROM is MB11.0061.B03, and I've missed no updates. This did not appear in software update, I tried to download it from Apple.com.

Put me down as another person who doesn't have the right Boot ROM, installs all updates, and yet "doesn't need it."

2.2 GHz MBP last gen.

Same here on my 2.4 GHz MBP. The external monitor issues are gone.

Now if only X11 could properly cope with resolution changes.

That's a brilliant point! Thanks for reminding me. I'll need to test my MacBook to see if the screen freaks out when I reboot out of Windows with an external monitor attached.

My MacBook has identifier of 3,1 but the update didn't come up in Software update... Didn't miss any firmware update. The MacBook is just over 3 months old.

For those not sure about whether they should or should not be getting this update, this appears to be up to date:

MBP31.0070.B07

is later than

MBP31.0070.B05, correct?

So by that logic, this should be a needed update. But it ain't.
