MacUpdate has recently moved blocking ads on macupdate.com from a $20/year paid Membership service, to a free service. All you need to simply do is create a free MacUpdate Member account and all of the ads on the site will be blocked automatically.

The problem with ad block software is that it's not 100% accurate. In fact, it often blocks links that have specific keywords in them. And example is /promo/ -- so you might not even be able to take advantage of buying software at a 50% discount through the MacUpdate Promo if you use adblock software. However, by creating a little account that's free, you get the performance and accuracy at 100%. It has no risk factor.
