To take a wild guess its for some sort of inventory navigation for shooters and RPGs, seems cool.

The whole system design is fugly though. Amazing how four years of R&D from Microsoft has left us with something that a month of production at Sextoys.com yields.

Had heard somewhere that it had a front port for the forthcoming M$ iPod killer the plug into. Overall, it is kinda testosterone-tacky. Like Alienware's stuff.

It dosent look like a behemoth or something Darth Vader would want. lol. i loathe microsoft's gaming division, but i think this design is definately an improvement over the current xbox.

I like the smooth curves (hey im a guy ), but the controller does look very un-ergonomic imo. Whether this design will stack up against the Revolution or the PS3 has yet to be seen.

Judging from controller design....i think it's safe to say that gaming has taken a back seat to the other features of the xbox (Tivo like stuff....to tie you into yet another format/store/service), much like what Sony's probably going to be doing with the PS3.

I have to agree with Bill though, seems like for a device like this Sony and MS are the competitors, and they seem to have used gaming to get into the living room to tie you into their respective services.

Hopefully Nintendo wont follow, and stick to just gaming, cause thats all i want in my living room, with the addition of a HD-Video player.... that dosent tie me to a particular company store for service. (iPod is the exception to this rule....just cause no one has come up with something better for music of course )

Notice the X design on it. The current controller has the same logo in black green on a little plastic piece.

I like how they moved the back and start buttons from the left side, to the top middle of the controller. Looks like more of the same good old Xbox controller. No I'm not kidding, PS2 and NGC controllers make my hands hurt.

2 things bothers me though.
1)White? For a controller. I'm going to wait for an aftermarket controller in a color that doesn't show body oils, dirt, grease, and every other dirty substance that can stain this thing.
2)If the controllers really are wireless, there better be a recharging station. I am not buying millions of batteries for a game system. Also, how many frequencies do they have. If there's 30-60 geeks together LANing it up, the controllers should all work without crossing over on each other.

Aesthetically, it's so much nicer than Xbox 1. I've read (can't remember where) the silver trackball thingy is a switch/button/selector, it does have seem numbers around the edge... My god, what's this? Is the Xbox hype beginning to reach me? Already?! Xbox1 never popped up on my radar even once and I haven't even got a PSP yet! (wanders away grumbling about UK PSP September release date....)

One thing I hate about video game console developers - they never think about where you're supposed to put these things in an entertainment cabinet. I would be able to save so much space if consoles were stackable with my other A/V equipment! They either make the tops of them curved or top loading.

Sony DID think of this with the original PS2, that's why it kind of looks like a retro hifi unit.

As mentioned before, given their are numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 around the silverball I would agree their has to be a function. My guess is that, since they went wireless that the big trackball is actually 4 buttons, that allow you to select which player you will be.....player 1, 2, 3, or 4.

The X 1-2-3-4 thingie might also be a set of wireless channel indicator lights. If so, there'd be only 4 channels.

Just a guess,

Garage81, does your TV remote have rumble pack motors or analogue controls? Don't think so, so no it isnt the same thing. OK, to add to the 'What does the silver trackball do?' question, I want to know what the parts on the front of the console are? ?

Little black thing on top left - dont know, its not a controller port, cos they're wireless, and there is only one of them.
Right hand side - Disc tray
2 panels under little black thing - memory card slots
Button in ring - Power button
Panel/s at bottom under Power button - dont know

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

i'd guess its either a add-on rumble thingy like (i think) the N64, or a rechargable battery.

They've shown the bottom of the controller but it didn't seem to even have a battery door so hopefully they are rechargeable through that port on the bottom edge.

if i were designing the thing, id make a cable to attact the controller to the console, so it could be used, while recharging....it could be a port for that kind of cable.

Also if any of the 3 release wireless controllers that need to use AAs...that automatically disqualifies them in my book. best case senario...battery is rechargable and easily replaced, but should last for a good year or year-n-a-half before having to be replaced.

I'm hoping that is what those little doors on the bottom of the system are for.

That, and every wireless console controller I've used has messed up at a critical point in a game. I've used a couple 3rd party X-Box controllers and Nintendo's wave ones (I took those back the same day). The cord has never bothered me.

Although wireless console controllers are definitely more useful than wireless keyboards. I have no idea why people want wireless keyboards...

No, it's not just being WHITE. It's translucent plastic surrounding white. With rounded edges. With big, 1960's-esque round buttons and rounded selectors. It looks like an iBook mated with a PS2.

I wonder if the power cords are TRANSPARENT. That would be soooo cool.

The original X-Box was unique. Ugly as sin and as big as my mother-in-law's ass, but unique nevertheless.

I've always found rumble annoying, but none the less there is no reason it wouldn't have both - just as my logitech wireless controllers do.
