If you want a movie that has every western cliche known to man, then watch Silverado.
Gunfights, fast-draw showdowns, smoke-filled saloons, saloon girls, homesteaders, wagon trains, outlaws, posses, jailbreaks, stampedes, box canyons, Western scenery...everything. And it's on Netflix to boot. Yep...pun.

With all the picking being done, I'll probably be left the outhouse
This western theme makes me think of the first large city in red dead redemption, it's all I can picture

Man, did you guys ever take my idea and run in the wrong direction with it. I was talking about something small, simple, and quick. You guys are getting into the same trap I did – large, extravagant and complicated.
Oh, and for the record JB, the plot size I was working on for a building was 7 x 7, expanding a "mega" one to maybe 15 x 10.

I was thinking a street frontage of 10 and a max depth of 20, with the impression that they'll start as 10 x 8 or something and then inevitable grow.

I'll make a creative mode mockup of what I have in mind for my Sheriff's Office/Jail. It will only be one floor and be twice as deep as it is wide.
I'll take a screenshot for approval.

Quick n' Dirty. Dirt plot is 10x15, so I fit well within it. My bedroom is in the jail cell.

I like.
You've done almost exactly the same thing with the overhang that I did in my mock-up. I didn't have the decorative extension though, and mine's a block deeper in front.

7x7, eh? That's going to present a challenge. I'll do some work...
We're also going to have to set a standard spacing between buildings. If we're going to mimic the old western towns, it'll have to be narrow. 2 blocks?

7x7 is pretty damn tiny, a bit to tiny IMO. 10x10 should be minimum.

Eh, with such limited space I'd rather just stick to a simple dwelling.
Building is 7x7 (not counting overhang), plot is 9 wide (with single lane alleys on each side) and shown here a 2 wide sidewalk in front. Doable, but I'll need at least a 9x9 basement to house my bed and proper crafting area.

What a coincidence that this lines up with my original intent.
Edit: Sidewalk does not count towards plot size.
Edit 2: Was thinking about a community crafting area.

So is the total plot size going to be 7x7 (as I've shown, right up against the sidewalks) or will it be bigger with only the building limited to 7x7?

My designs are 7 x 7 buildings, right up to the sidewalk. I've added one block alleys randomly for effect.
Like I said, if I'm not spent when I get home, I'll upload a few pics.
Edit: I did add backdoors with steps and a rear basement entrance that exceeded that plot size but those were stylistic decisions.

Okay, 7x7 is fine, as long as I can take up the same 7x7 space underground for a basement.
This is more or less my final design, basically a little Mossy Cobble bulkhead that leads you underground.

I think 2block sidewalks and 2 block alleys would be better... and I don't think a 10x10 is too huge.

That's probably because I'm not attempting to make them look western. 7x7 is restrictive enough that I'd rather just build something I like rather than trying to make some tiny bland wooden building.
Really I think we are getting a bit to picky here, this is a small town we are going to throw up quick to get started on a new map, which is really what I care about, not trying to make some authentic western town.

In that case, why stay with a theme? Let's all just build 7x7 safe-houses with 7x7 basements that look nice, and then surround the entirely-lit town with a fence. That's our safety zone. From there, we branch out.

Endermen suck because they're annoying, and because I nerfed them and made them too easy. I shall fix this.
This has the potential to become a soap opera...

In goofing around with 7x7, 10x10, 7x10, 9x7 plots last night, I realized the reason a western theme is so difficult to pull off is because there's no way to simulate that rustic texture (without modding the game). The wood is just too clean. Not having paint hurts as well.

If you make it so then can move everything people end up building houses in the sky.
If you severely limit what they can move then a basic house is fine and they're no different from zombies.
The line between the two is very close. Any block they can't move you can build a wall out of.
I think the block moving should 2 level. When their passive the nerf'd version. When they're aggro they will move (not carry around) blocks in their way. So you can bunker down but once they spot you, there's no place to hide.

Yeah, I came to conclusion Notch needs to hire someone who is focused on the design/building portion of the game. It's his decision to focus on expanding the way the game works (and I think the majority of the people look forward to those features), but I have to imagine it's damn close to a majority of people who also love the building aspect the game. Having someone dedicated to making variations for every conceivable material added (half-slabs), or expanding materials (Dark wood), would give the more creatively focused people some benefit without Notch having to worry about adding/modeling tedious shit he obviously has no real interest in.

Or you can admit the idea just doesn't work.
Anyway, I think he's focused on the threat aspect, not the block aspect.

He keeps adding things that the game just doesn't need. I believe the reason that Notch is missing the mark a bit lately is that he is a coder, through-and-through, designing and programming a game that appeals to creative types. I'm not sure he entirely understands his crowd.
Was anyone actually asking for more mobs (especially ones that wreck your creations)?

Eh, not quite. He's a fan of these hardcore games (roguelike, I believe) so he's trying to shoe-horn in those features as he sees opportunities. Notch is fan gameplay that most of us would term "tedious" (See: Hunger).

He'd basically making a 3D Rogue clone a piece at a time. There's talk of potions, after that it's magic. When skills get added (Dakar already posted their example) you'll get pick pocket etc. NPCs are comming, add in currency and you get trade & stores.
Though I think it will stay sandbox style instead of quest driven like WOW.

Reason: Rogue older then NetHack. But I still prefer Moria.)

Bingo. What we need is something we can erect fast, yet something we will like ourselves. I'm all for a group theme eventually, but the more we weigh ourselves down with semantics right now the less fun we are going to have starting a fresh world.

I'd agree with that, especially while gathering resources. I want all my valuables from our last game to be safe in a basement while I go find a not-too-distant location for a big project.

You can build a 4 mile railway in the nether instead. Or one of those water roads.
