Please share with me any likes or dislikes you have with the HP 7660 and 7760.. I am leaning towards the 7760 (which is now on order), but can change my mind if need be.

Thanks

What is your primary use of these printers? Photo's or test/graphics?

Primary use would be basically general "home use" mostly word processing and internet stuff, with photo's on occasion.. I currently have an Epson Stylus 980 which is fast for normal printing but not the best photo printer. Plus, it's 4 years old!

Have you checked out the Canon i860. Consumers report gave this printer its top rating and the text cost is less than half of what the HP's are.

Yup, I haven't heard of anyone buying an HP lately ...
I have a Canon S630 right now and I am very happy. I used it a lot for all kinds of stuff -- scripts, presentations (including color handouts), business cards, photos, etc. Fast, quiet, reliable, and (compared to printers of its generation) good printout quality.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Why would you be looking at either HP?

1. $100 rebate when purchased with my Apple
2. I am sick of my Epson 980, and Epson in general (had problems with them in the beginning days with OS X)
3. The 7760/660 looks great sitting next to a G5 (color of hardware mimics aluminum)

4. HP never got my business for printers before, so I thought I'd try them.

So everyone is happy with Cannon?

A big factor is cost of Ink.. I don't believe the HP's are cheap, but they are easy to refill.

Anyway, thanks for any input.

Take the HP from Apple, sell it still closed, get ANY canon.

HP's have the highest cost per page and the worst Mac software out there.

Epsons are junk cuz they clog all the time and waste ink cleaning.

HP printers are the most reliable around in my experience. I've never had an issue with an HP printer, and I've owned them for over 10 years, and my original Deskwriter circa 1991 or 2 still works. I'm VERY happy with HP printers. I've had bad experiences with Epson and Canon. Although I think the current generation of Canon printers are pretty good, you can't go wrong buying HP, except that some models have rather expensive ink cartridges.

Easy to refill? Have you ever tried or read about it?
Let me tell you that the HPs I have used were impossible to refill.

fwiw, my HP 7110 is very easy to refill.

1. peel off the sticker on top of the cartridge.
2. squeeze ink into one of the 3 holes.
3. place a new sticker on top of the holes.
4. print.

my old HP was not as easy, you had to use an adapter. not sure what the 7660 use, but i use the 14 cartridge.

I have had bad experiences with 3rd party ink. Head clogging and poor colour or colour fastness.

Canon Ink is cheap compared to others so i don't mind getting the real thing.

If you pick up a copy of Consumer reports that reviewed the printers you will also find an article on third party inks. Unless the inks are pigmented then your chance of getting a quality refill is not very good.

I have tried with an old HP510 and with a G85. Result: the ink ran down my fingers, the capacity of the cartridge was very limited and it started smearing if there were long printouts. Because the printer was used for presentations (20 x 20 pages in color), this made refilling a no-go for me.

I can get third-party Canon ink for 3-4 Euros, so refilling is not necessary. I still prefer original ink, because the inks don't run as badly, yellow and black in particular.
