I forgot my root password. I am trying to change my short name on my mac and it will not let me because I cannot remember my password. Any help would be great.

Did you forget the root password, or your user's password? Sounds like you forgot your user's password....
If you forgot root, just go into terminal and type "sudo passwd root", and then enter in your user's password when it prompts you.

IIRC, you can't from the account preferences panel. You might have to use a combination of changing /etc/passwd and the netinfo manager. Be sure to create an extra administrative account before you mess around with it.

There is a third party tool that allows you to change the short user name. Search versiontracker.com but use at your own risk. Officially it's not really possible to change the short user name.

You could always try it the "Apple" way:

Step 1 not necessary... but,
you're joking right? Bcuz,
there's a lot more left to do:
Copy items from old account
to new account. Change the
ownerships and groups for
all those copied items. Then
delete the old account. But,
now instead of being uid 501
you're uid 502. (Hope you're
not syncing a PowerBook to
a Desktop or anything).

Joking... yes.
If you look at Apple's official instructions, there are 40 steps, including the activation (and subsequent deactivation) of root.
