This is the 3rd I have heard about in a month. When the MPAA isn't suing people with no computers the RAA is going around suing 8 year olds for one Britney song.

Yeah, this is out of control. I think they need to fight the crime in California first.

I kind of feel sorry for these guys b/c they are legitimate companies and they need to turn profits for their hard work (yes, making a good movie that sells is hard work for most of the people involved in the production effort). Nevertheless, I don't see the business model lasting much longer.

Ya think? The business model was broken years ago! When will they wake up and stop beating a dead horse?

I read a great article about how latin america is not buying any movies these days, well, none legally. Its great to hear the MPAA complain about people who make $20 a month not shelling out most of it for a legal movie, when they can buy a bootleg for under $1.

They`re at least trying to go out in a blaze of glory.

If they do nothing, they lose,
if they do what they want, they lose.
I'd say the RIAA is doing worse.
The business model has seen it's final days. Either they change, or they reap the consequences. How sad for them... no really.
Okay, not really.

Spokeswoman Michelle Greeno said MPAA investigators subpoena the suspected pirates' Internet service providers to make their case.
"We don't have evidence that they downloaded the films, but we do know they have these films on their computers," she said.
How does that make sense?

Who knows. Perhaps she had it on her computer, fired up a sharing program and it was in the shared folder.

All the movie swapping is run by Grandmas! It's a front! The perfect cover!

Well using a grandma as a front is wrong.

Anyone see that Monty Python sketch with the Old Lady gang? Yeah, that's what's going on. Those old bats are charging "protection money" from the local kids to run their music and movie pirating business.

Grandma's computer is probably like a lot of other home PCs running Windows... Zombie-ized and serving up illegal shared files left and right. So, sure, it may very well be on Grandma's computer. But she doesn't know it.

So the new question is, do we charge Grandma?
Should Grandma be implicated when jr left a pipe in a drawer while he stayed for the weeked?
Should Grandma be a suspect and/or accomplice to a crime she was completely unrelated to?
If Grandma's at the scene of the crime, does that make her a suspect?

Exactly.
This is the problem with the MPAA et. al. suing everyone. Sure, the person might have had the file on their hard drive, but if I throw a pound of pot on someone's lawn, should that person go to prison? No - there has to be CONCLUSIVE PROOF that the person actually went out and downloaded the file. If they can't prove it, then they should not be allowed to sue. Also, how did they know the file was there? One last point - what if I was working on a homemade video and named it StarWars.VOB? Does that give the MPAA the right to come after me on the fact of the filename itself?
This whole thing needs to stop NOW. The MPAA/RIAA are getting rich off of people that may actually be innocent.
Mike

The CD hasn't dropped in price during the DECADES that it has existed. Despite increase in supply, improved production technologies, drastically decline in the product's novelty, and a [I]huge reduction in demand[/I.] This doesn't happen without intervention. Intervention in this case is illegal. I don't consider these legitimate companies, and neither do the people who steal from them.

Good for them! Someone's assaulting their game and they have to fight for their rights. Should an 8 year old girl be allowed to steal someones lunch money? No. So why should we feel sorry for her when she steals a movie. If a grandmother has 8lbs of crack in her fridge she should be the prime investigated. Goddddd

I'd like to know why they go after kids when, last weekend in Little Italy I saw 6 or 7 people openly walking Mulberry Street selling The Davinci Code and other films.

Kid's downloading is easier to scare them away from. Go after a street level vendor and their associates move but keep selling. The distribution wont stop or slow down. Fewer people relate to the street level vendors, hearing about them being caught wont scare the masses.

Nah most of them were from at least partly indie labels. I don't even know if there's any copies of them around. And besides I think Canada's fair use laws would protect me.
