i've been trying to convert mpeg videos for play on my video ipod but i'm not having much luck. i tried using the export to ipod feature in quicktime pro (which you would think would work perfectly) but the audio is missing. i tried handbrake but it said the files weren't even vaild, and i tried ffmpeg and the audio worked but the video is messed up. somebody please help me! the only reason i bought this video ipod is so i can watch my collection of live music videos on my pod.

All of you have Quicktime Pro 7.0.3? I am curious as I want to do the same thing. Try converting the video to MPEG-1 before using quicktime pro. iVCD could do that for you.

Get MPEG Streamclip (Versiontracker). Then buy the MPEG Audio Component from Apple ($20)

then you can get your videos converted WITH the audio

Ok, maybe a stupid question, but how do I open that program after I download it? It asked me which application I wish to open it with...

if you check the info in quicktime you will probably find the files are muxed mpeg1 files. that means the audio and video are basically combined as one track instead of two seperate tracks. so when quicktime tries to export it it just catches the video portion and no audio.
you can use MPEG StreamClip (probably the easiest solution) or FFMPEG or some other program that supports demuxing (seperating the track back into 2 parts).
MPEG SteamClip is what id recommend unless you know alot about video.
its free and u can get it here http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/15466

This begs the question: Why is QuickTime such utter crap that it can't handle muxed MPEGs?! It is supposed to be an editing app. It is too limited IMO for an app that you pay for.

it can play them back, just not convert them. ive always wondered why it cant seperate them back out on export, but thats definitely whats going on. ive had the problem as well. not that big of a deal to me cause there is free utilities out there, but i agree its something that should be supported in QT Pro.

yes...definately use iSquint. There no point in spending money on fancy programs (quicktime), when iSquint can do it for you!

I've found that Podner:
http://www.splasm.com/products/productpodner.html
works GREAT at converting muxed-audio mpg files. It also converts other formats, as well. Great little application and only $9! I just registered it last night. Give it a shot.
