Hi There ...
Just wondering if any of you think/know that Tiger will ever be available as a cd install instead of a dvd ....

Yes, you have to send it back to get CD's. That's not a good solution Apple...

Target Disk Mode works well.

not really... you dont have to have Tiger, and Apple did the same thing when the teardrop imacs came out and they only had USB connectors and no PS2.... they're forcing you to get with the times, nothign wrong with that.
and if you really want it on CD, Apple provides an option for it. You just have to wait a week or so for ur CDs to arrive from Apple. No harm, no foul.

I have an older G4 at work with a CD-RW drive in it. I put the OS 10.4 install DVD in my Powerbook, connected the Powerbook to the tower with a firewire cable, reboooted the Powerboook in firewire target disk mode, and the install DVD promptly showed up on the desktop of my tower.

Awesome point. I've never read any thread about a switcher complaining about a lack of PS2 ports in their shiney new iMac G5. Likewise, in a couple years no one will complain about lack of CD availability.

PS2? I think you mean ADB or Serial.
And I don't think it's really the same thing. Apple was dropping hardware options, forcing you to upgrade your associated hardware. Now Apple is providing preferential support - they still provide Tiger on CD, so it's not like it's any more difficult to intall it from cds or doesn't run on computers that only have cd drives. So what, the CD media is too expensive? I don't thnk so.
Personally I think it's an effort to curb piracy/build leaks more than anything. Everyone and their grandmother has a cd burner and can find a torrent. DVD burners are much less common.

CDs have been around since the 80s. They are pretty old.
I think it's akin to the 5.25" and 3.5" switch, then the original CD switch. A lot of programs (especially on the IIgs and Commodore) came on either 5.25" or 3.5" with a form to fill out for the other size disk. Later on, it was the same thing with CDs. A lot of programs came on CD with a form to fill out for the Floppy version.
So now OS X comes on a DVD with a form to fill out for the CD version. Seems reasonable.

Tiger on CD was an option from day 1.
It's cheaper to make 1 DVD vs. 5+ CDs.
Considering most of the people installing tiger would either have a combo drive or be network booting... I don't see the big issue.

its only cd's 4, and if my understanding of raw media is correct 4 cds are cheaper than one dvd (1-5 cents each vs 25-100 cents each for dvd. )
my mac is new so i have a dvd on it, but i do think its unfair for apple to charge extra for a cheaper media version of the same product.

I need the floppy disk version.
C'mon, Apple, don't leave us faithful behind and penalize us so!
