What are "receipts" and what is their purpose ??? I am asking becuase I recently found that I had receipts in /Library/Receipts for applications that I had long since trashed and gotten rid of. I am wondering if it is safe for me to dump the receipts to an application after I have installed the application and/or after I no longer have the application. Or, should I keep them where they are and not mess with it. I am curious to know if they serve any vital purpose or are they just simply proof that a paarticular application was installed. On my Mac, I can really care less whether or not I have "receipt" for an application that I have installed. However, if they are a vital part of the application or to the system as a whole then I do not want to trash them. Peace out . . .

IIRC, it lets Software Update know that you've received the update.

you WANT to keep the ones for the apps you have; apple, for instance, checks for the receipt when updating (ie if it sees iphoto 5, will offer updates to 5.0.4, etc)

the other ones...adios, but be sure they dont belong to anything u need...

They also store the correct permissions for a program/file/preference so when you do repair permissions, it will actually work.

Thanks for the heads up my Mac brethren. I surely would have been in a pickle if I had not consulted with you lot before I trashed any receipt files. So, as I am understanding it, I can dump the receipts for any apps that I no longer use or have ??? Peace out . . .
