Kind of curious. I didn't want to order the extra RAM from apple because it seemed expensive.
But I think they ship them with 2X256MB sticks unless you suggest otherwise. Which has me curious if I'll be able to upgrade to 1GB without loosing a stick?

Your best bet is either to wait until RAM is cheap enough not to care about throwing one out (in other words, 512 is under $100), or to pay the US$100 ($90 edu?) BTO cost to get the 512 consolidated into one slot.
The 17" has the advantage of having it all in one slot by default. The 15" should too--because SO many people will want more than 512. Something so common shouldn't need BTO.

I have seen them. I forgot the website though. Basically, from what I'm told, any sodimm 333 pc2700 will work on the new 15 pb.

1GB sticks do exist. However, right now, they cost between 4-8 times as much as a 512MB module (i.e. 2-4 times the cost per MB).
