I just got my wife's old iBook G4 14" 1Ghz back from her mother who borrowed it after her computer died a few months back. After getting it back I was looking it over, installing Software Updates that were ignored, etc. and I noticed in the about this mac window that some RAM was missing. I went into the system profiler and it says:
DIMM0/BUILT-IN:

Size: 128 MB
Type: Built-in
Speed: Built-in
Status: OK
Manufacturer: Unknown
Part Number: Unknown
Serial Number: Unknown

DIMM1/J31:

Size: 1 GB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC2100U-25330
Status: OK
Manufacturer: Unknown
Part Number: Unknown
Serial Number: Unknown

I personally added the 1 GB stick a few years back, but I am sure that the computer came with 256 KB built in, not 128. Is there any good explanation for the missing memory other than it got cooked? Any way I can test for it even though the system seems to think the 128 KB is fine? Any way I might get it back? Also, could this be an indication of any other issues?

According to Mactracker, there was an iBook model that came with 128MB on the logicboard with MachineID PowerBook 6,3. The iBook with Machine ID PowerBook 6,5 came with 256MB. PowerBook 6,7 came with 512.

I am rather sure this computer came with 256MB. It is the computer on the right most column of this link (M9165LL/A): iBook G4 - Technical Specifications

Thanks for the reply though. Any help is appreciated.

That model came with 256 MB ram, 128 MB soldered to the board and 128 in the So-DIMM slot. You removed 128 MB ram when you installed the 1GB stick.
