The US Defense of Marriage Act "hurts legally married same-sex couples and prevents companies from treating all employees as equals," Apple spokesman Steve Dowling tells AllThingsD. "Apple strongly supports marriage equality and we hope the Supreme Court will declare the law unconstitutional." The quote comes in response to questions about Apple's participation in legal measures against DoMA and California's Proposition 8.

Apple has supported gay rights for some time, for example having long offered the same health benefits to homosexual and heterosexuals couples. In 2008 the company made a rare political statement by speaking out against Proposition 8, which it further backed by contributing $100,000 to the "No on 8" campaign. The Prop 8 ballot measure -- intended to ban gay marriage in California -- passed regardless, but has since been met with legal challenges that could see it permanently reversed. Opponents of Prop 8 have argued that a referendum can't be used to strip away basic rights.

Ever heard of equal protection under the law? It really doesn't get any more basic than that.

If you're unaware of the special-class status married couples enjoy, here's a quick breakdown for you -- and this is ignoring the open discrimination that is legal against homosexual couples in areas such as housing, visitation, adoption, profession and hundreds of other areas.

If you want to make the case that the government should have never gotten into the business of civic marriages in the first place, that's a different discussion (and an interesting one), but the Constitution compels equality for all citizens in all areas of the law, and since the government has given over 1,400 special benefits, rights and privileges to heterosexual couples, it must do the same for homosexual couples. Just as it (finally) did for interracial couples just a few decades back, the same arguments apply now.

I used to believe that people, out there really were fighting for equality.
I know, niave right.

The reality is, people trumpet equality when they agree with a position and forget about it when they don't agree.

Take the "Violence Against Women Act" - the constitution, in theory provides for equal protection under the law - for all genders.

There is no legitimate rationale, no benefit of any kind to society, to not pass a law called "Violence Against People Act".

Now these people that don't really care about equality in the least bit - most love this idea, of not protecting male victims of violence and abuse. Just a tiny few will try to defend it by saying it technically covers the male gender as well.

And those few are still wrong. The bill is a funding bill and it funds nothing for the protection of the male gender.

I'll grant you - violence against women is a real problem, but the real problem of violence against men - doesn't need to be completely ignored. We used to have a "Civil Rights" bill - not a civil rights bill for blacks.

It did - largely address prejudice against blacks, but it was a bill for everyone.

That belief in equality does not exist at Apple - and they are absolutely full of it.

yeah - equal protection under the law is what you say when you are talking about homosexual marriage rights.

And then when you are talking about protection of men, under the violence against women act - it's the thing you don't care about at all - go silent on, and couldn't care less about.

equal protection is the last thing anyone wants to discuss tonight! Because the violence against women act - truly doesn't fund anything for the protection of both genders.

We used to believe - we were told this myth that if you elect female senators, then politics would be different.

Well guess what - 100% of them rejected the idea of equal protection under the law - 100% of them voted for benefits for their own gender, to the exclusion of other genders today.

Having worked for the company and numbers of others over my life. Without any question Apple is the most open company when it comes to benefits and who qualifies for them within a home. The fact is that they do everything to make the employees,and their family (based on the employees personal standards) all have access to ALL benefits. In this day and age this is beyond reasonable. People are people regardless of how they think or feel and a company like Apple is RARE, write about that!

To Apple Thank you for being open minded before it was the "thing to do"!
