I'm putting together some background music for a Drive-In movie night that we throw once every summer with the proceeds going to a local school. We project the movie onto one of the garage doors and the everyone watches while sitting in the driveway. We are estimating 100+ people this year.

Before the movie starts, we serve drive-in food (hot dogs, pizza, nachos) and play some music in the background.

I was looking for good movie soundtrack songs that:
1) Is generally well-known and liked
2) Is easily associated with a certain movie

Ones I came up with...
Blues Brothers - Shake Your Tailfeather, Think, etc.
Beverly Hills Cop - Axel F.
Satuday Night Fever - Stayin' Alive and other Bee Gees stuff
Grease - Greased Lightnin', Summer Nights, etc.
Rocky Horror - Timewarp
Monty Python Holy Grail - Camelot (maybe a little off the beaten path for the broad age range we'll be having)
Star Wars, Rocky title songs
Top Gun - Danger Zone
Mission Impossible Theme
The Wedding Singer - Somebody Kill Me (sung by Adam Sandler) - the other 80's songs on the soundtrack don't necessarily make you think of the specific movie
Shrek - Shrek Karaoke Dance Party (the kids uaually love that one)

I thought of a few from Transformers the Movie, Karate Kid, Mortal Kombat - but thought they may be too obscure.

Any others I should include?

Breakfast Club - Don't You (Forget About Me)
The Lion King - The Lion Sleeps Tonight
James Bond - Theme song
Back to the Future - Theme song (might be too obscure)

I would just get on the iTMS and look around in the Soundtracks section.

Great suggestions. I don't know how I forgot Bond & Raiders of the Lost Ark. I must have been thinking more of songs with lyrics, although I did remember Rocky and Star Wars.

Keep 'em coming.

A Chorus Line - "One," Tits and Ass (maybe there's a G-rated version), What I did for love.

Singing in the Rain - Title song, Good Mornin,

Mary Poppins - Almost any of them.

The Bodyguard - Almost any of the Whitney Houston songs.

Casablanca - As Time Goes By

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid - Raindrops Keep Fallin on my Head

FM - Steely Dan's title song, "FM" was better known and more successful than the film, FM.

Bridge on the River Kwai - Col. Bogey's March.

The Great Escape - ? Title song.

Wizard of Oz - Over the Rainbow, the Lollipop Guild

Ok, no more from the top of my head. Here's a cheat sheet!

Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

Bite your tongue! "The Touch" by Stan Bush is a must. Besides Transformers: The Movie, it was also featured in Boogie Nights.

Footloose - Kenny Loggins
Holiday Road - Lindsey Buckingham (from National Lampoon's Vacation)
Gonna Fly Now - Bill Conti (from Rocky)
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor (from Rocky III)
The Rainbow Connection - Kermit the Frog (from The Muppet Movie)
The Imperial March - John Williams (from The Empire Strkes Back)
Take My Breath Away - Berlin (from Top Gun)
Sway - Bic Runga (from American Pie)
A Whole New World - Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle (from Aladdin)
Are You That Somebody - Aaliyah (from Dr. Dolittle)

Just a few

Unchained Melody - Righteous Bros (Ghost)
May It Be - Enya (Fellowship of the Ring)
My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion (Titanic) ok... but it IS the top grossing film of all time.
I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton (Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) yeah, in this song Dolly kicks Witney's ass.
Angel - Sarah McLachlan (City of Angels)

first one that came to me was 'stuck int he middle with you' by Stealers Wheel from Reservoir Dogs. If you've seen the movie it's instantly recognizable, still sends shivers down my spine when i hear it.

Must be in something other than singing. Whitney's version is much better. Given their reputations, it's amazing that the original is more overwrought and over the top.
