Just picked up a HP Laserjet 4050N for cheap. It has an ethernet port, but no USB port. Does anyone know if I can hook this printer up directly by ethernet cable, or do I have to go through a hub?

Do I use the "IP Printer" option in the "Print Browser". I did see an option that said "HP Direct-Socket" Is this what I would use? I don't have a manual, so I can't RTFM.

Thanks.

If you're using a recent vintage Mac, it will work fine. Just set your Ethernet port to 192.168.0.1 and the printer to 192.168.0.2, netmask on both of 255.255.255.0.

Then tell the Mac to hook up to it with Jet Direct - according to HP, the software/drivers are included in Tiger.

Then d/l the manuals here:

Manual: the internet is your friend. If you have a router, you can plug it into the router. If it is a wireless router with a four-port switch, you just made yourself a wireless printer

If the router has a dhcp server, you're in even better shape.
