So I felt really bad for this girl with all that she had to go through. But a part of me also wants to smack her and say "how dumb can you get?".

I'm not sure what's worse. The fact hat it happened, or the fact that ABC was ****ing inconsiderate enough to put a ****ing video of her online so all her classmates and whatnot can download it and see her.

It's hard to believe people can be that frickin' stupid.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Yes

There are sick, evil and twisted people out there. Unfortunately there are always some innocent people who fall for their tricks. And harm is done.

People can get very dumb when they're afraid. I want to smack her manager.

The whole story was on 20/20 last Friday night and there was an interview with the girl so I would imagine they have permission to have it on the intraweb. It WAS on national TV after all.

The old bag is being charged and sued.

For people saying/implying she is dumb:

She did not consent to any of this. The caller convinced other employees to torture her, and the McDonalds manager went along with this. The others are the idiots here.

You've confused two classic obedience experiments:

Milgram's 1950s shock-learning experiments in which subjects were lead to believe that they were injuring the "learner" showed the truly scary power of obedience to authority.

The Stanford Prison Study by Zimbardo in the 70s showed how readily people will adopt roles.

Sucks for the girl. But anyone who believes for a second that a cop would call them on the phone and order them to do something is really out to lunch. I'm glad the manager was fired, because she is a complete moron and a danger to others.

The caller didn't committ any crime either. Taking advantage and making fun of imbeciles is never a crime.

It's difficult to tell whether they would have let her leave or not. Initially she was alone in the room with the assistant manager, but then there was another larger girl present during the stripping apparently keeping there. Later the guy is obviously blocking the door.

Still, she never really seems to protest or do anything that would really indicate that she found the situation overly unreasonable. At some point one has to take some action, like give them the finger or at least start screaming for help and breaking things. For most people I think this would occur prior to "give this random guy a bj."

Everyone involved in this story is completely retarded.

btw, i posted this story in another thread a couple days ago

Falsely claiming to be a Police Officer and convincing people to act wrongly upon your implied authority is not a wise career choice. AFAIK, False Impersonation of a Police Officer is a felony in every state.

Okay, dressing up as a police officer and flashing a fake badge and trying to do things police officers do is impersonating a police officer, not calling someone up and saying "this is the police, now drop your pants."

You're taking it way too far.

Really.

What?! Calling yourself a police officer (when you are not one) and ordering people to do things is impersonating a police officer, whether in person or on the phone. Please explain how it is not.

So if an elderly person gets a call from someone who claims to be a police officer who then scams the elderly person out of a large sum of money with the old "counterfeiting ring" scam or "Sting Money" scam, that's okay? Because they did it over a phone? And it is the elderly persons fault for being a chump, right?
Brilliant.
If you call someone and claim to be police officer and use that implied authroity to coerce someone into an action... hey! Felony! Doesn't matter if it is over the phone, in person, etc.

This in no way absolves the idiot McD employees from their roles. Just means the nitwit making the call is getting nailed as well.

Really.
You, sir, are an idiot. Firstly, it's still impersonating a police officer.

Secondly, though stripping was humiliating enough, she was also sodomized—raped.

It's unfortunate she didn't stand up for herself, but even that might've not changed the situation.

You're not taking it far enough.

It's scary what people are prepared to do. Especially when they think they are following orders™, given by a figure they presume is one of authority.

Of course the manager was an idiot. Of course the girl should have told them to **** themselves, refused to strip and insisted on calling her parents or somebody else she trusted. But she was probably first scared, then humiliated and then just wanted the nightmare to end.

But because they all assumed that they were dealing with a bona fide policeman they were too intimidated and too damn stupid to see the charade for what it was.

It took only one person of sound judgement, the caretaker, to put a stop to it. Instantly.

I am glad the guy who impersonated a cop is going to be locked up, the longer the better. And I don't have much sympathy for the guy who went along with it, although in a way he too is a victim.

Does MCD carry any of the responsibility? I don't think so. You can't hold an employer responsible for the actions of a bunch of idiots, surely? Now, if the hoax caller would have been a widely publicized menace, I'd think differently.

Well, it sounds like she had a choice:

It was Ogborn's word against the accusation of a man claiming to be a cop, and she was given a choice: submit to a search or be escorted to the police station.

Ok, the problem here is that Americans have a much higher respect and fear of police officers (and ANY person in uniform, at that matter) than people in Europe. I'm not saying it's necessarily good or bad, it's just a fact.

In Germany, police offficers are NEVER considered as much an authority figure as in the US. You can NEVER just get thrown in jail for 24-48 hours w/o charges. All that stuff makes an American police officer much more powerful, and people willing to submit to any crap.

I have seen in the US people willingly follow the silliest commands given by mall cops or other uniformed private security "officers", that have de facto NADA to say. Yet, as soon as someone wears a uniform, people treat them as half-gods and throw away their brains. It's ridiculous.

Honestly, something is wrong with this overly authoritarian way police is behaving in the US. Leaves too much room for abuse, in so many ways.

I'm fairly sure they need the girl's permission to do that (thought I'm not sure if it applies in this case), which she probably did, considering how she consented to an interview.
