I desperately needed the portability of a laptop. I was going to settle for a last revision model of the 15" Powerbook G4 from a local buyer, but I bit the bullet and purchased a 2GHz MacBook Pro instead. I'm selling my iMac G5 (the one I'm typing on right now) to a local buyer later tonight, so I basically had to choose... hopefully this purchase will prove to be the smarter decision and last longer than a Powerbook G4?

I'm going from a 2GHz iMac G5 to a 2GHz MacBook Pro. Will the difference in speed be that noticeable? Or should I have waited like everyone else? I couldn't take it anymore!

I am excited, though.. the last Apple laptop I owned was a 12" 1.33GHz iBook G4, and needless to say, that lovely machine was a little bit behind the times. I ended up selling it this past March.

Encouragement would be appreciated.

i went from a DP 1.8 G4 to a 2.0 MacBook, and I notice a huge difference in universal apps. In Rosetta emualation, it's a large improvement over my 1.33 iBook too.

Hurray!!!! From all accounts you won't see anything but FAST compared to your old iMac-remember there are TWO processor cores in the MacBook Pro, both running at 2.0GHz in your case (and mine-that's the model I have). It's a dream of a laptop.

I went from a similar set-up (2.0 GHz 20" iMac G5) to a 17" 2.16 GHz MBP. The difference is night and day. My iMac actually seems SLOW compared to the MBP. I made sure all my apps were Universal - makes a big difference. Upped the RAM to 2 GB in the MBP - this thing is a screamer!

I just sold my 15" 2.0 MBP and upgraded to the 15" 2.16 MBP mainly because of the HD and Ram. The 80GB HD was too small IMO cause Mac OS X takes up 20GB!! And its nice having 1GB * 1 .. The Vram was just the bonus..

You'll enjoy your system.. I was considering on holding out after i sold my system for updates... But I miss OS X too much.

os x takes up from under 3 to 4 gigs... not 20.
(of course more with apps)

but, uh, still not 20gigs!

I don't know about your system.. But i've reinstalled my OS more than 3-4 times.. And everytime.. i'm missing 20GB.

On a 80GB HD, i only had 60GB left.
On a 100GB HD, i only had 79GB left.

Care to explain the missing space? And this is RIGHT after i get pass the basic setup. Nothing installed.

eric are you new to computers?

if its a 80gb harddrive you dont get the full 80 gigs everybody knows this. You get around 71-72 gigs and then depending on what you leave installed then it can come down to 60-63 gigs.

I have installed mac os x before and when i take out uneeded stuff my installation is like 2.3gigs
if i install ilife and other stuff it can get up to 5-6 gbs-so do the math and you will crack the mistery.

I'm sorry.. but you lost me..

80GB is actually about 74-75GB. Care to explain where the 15GBs went then? I'm left with 60GB straight out of the box.

100GB is actually 93.16 GB. Straight out of the box.. only 79GB free.

I'm not new to computers.. but i can do some basic math.. 15GB is a lot for OS..

I'll make a correction.. 15GB instead of the earlier stated 20GB is what the OS is taking up

I usually get my OS X install (both Panther and Tiger) to around 4-6gb (including iPhoto, iTunes). It's been ages since I've done a fresh install, although I tend to skip things like Garageband, iMovie and iDVD as my iBook G4 is too slow to bother with those apps.

iMac G5 1.6Ghz 17"
