Hi all

My beloved 17" PB is about to go on Ebay, so I wonder if someone could tell me how to delete all my info etc. and return it to a completely empty state?

Many thanks.

Hold it upside down and shake it all around; just like an Etch-a-Sketch!

put the install dvd that came with it into the drive.
restart the computer holding the C key.
go through the mac os setup until you come to a screen that has an options (or customize or something) button in the bottom left corner.
- click this and you will get an option to do archive & install and some other options
- one of the options is a clean install.

clean install will format your computer and install mac os as it is the day you buy a brand new computer. (the welcome video and create a user account)

If you have important data on the PB, you may want to run Disk Utility first and format the drive using one of the Security Options for extra safety.

Hope you're getting a new Mac!

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it.

Mike - already bought it! Got a 20" iMac and it's utterly beautiful.

mduell - oh my aching sides.

Scylla, just curious. What were your main reasons for going with the iMac over the 17" PowerBook? And did you get the "new" iMac with the iSight built in?

Yeah use disk edit.
Do the random data thing (like 11 passes).
I really doubt anyone would find anything on the drive after that.

Go for that 11x random one. Clearly nobody would be able to get any usefull date from it then.
Well they might be able to get some old preferance files

As much as I love the PB, the main reason I chose it in the first place was that I thought I'd be taking it everywhere with me - in the end, I think it only left my study once! So it might as well have been a desktop.

The iMac is more powerful, has a huge hard drive, stunning screen and is easier to use with a proper keyboard etc. I was going to get one of the new iSight versions, but in the end I got a £250 discount by going for one of the outgoing models. I'm absolutely delighted with it.

Cheers
