Story here.
If you're using Photobucket to host images used in the forums, you might want to move them elsewhere.

I'm willing to pay for simple image and file hosting. But not $400 per year. More like $10-20 per year.
Photobucket had been on my list of potential hosts, the next time I needed one. No more.

I used them ages ago, but at some point they started downconverting resolution.
No thanks.

They must have seen Dropbox drop their public folder support and saw the outcry of "at least offer to charge me for the privilege."
I'm seeing dead images all over the internet already.

I have this "they shot themselves in the foot...with a bazooka" feeling about Photobucket right now. A $400 per year fee may be viable for "commercial" hosting, but half of the Intarwebz has/have used PB for hosting. Now, maybe almost nobody will, and their fees and ad revenue will probably go down drastically. Not the best move, guys.

Is it really $400?
I know it's not quite the same, but can't I get 10 gigs on a CDN for like, half that?

If dropbox would give me my public linking back for $50, I'd be in.
Why am I still paying for flickr pro? I stopped pretending to be pro years ago.

I'm paying about $75 a year for my website (actually two domains) with enough bandwidth that I can host any pictures I want... And my service, 1 and 1, isn't even the least expensive hosting service out there.

So to use PB like you used to, including forum posting, really is $400 per year.

And reports coming in of them essentially holding accounts hostage until paid up... some people are getting a 'external linking exceeded - gimme $' when trying to download their photos.
My guess is they are nearly out of capital, desperate, and dead before 2018.

For those that are finding their web experience littered with dead links, there are now Chrome and Firefox extensions that fix the hotlinked photos. Not sure about Safari.

Backblaze B2 is an option that is substantially cheaper than Amazon S3.

That's pretty cool. Any idea how they go about getting around Photobucket's wall?

It was always possible to see the image by clicking through and going to Photobucket's site. Someone apparently figured out how to get at that source image. I wouldn't be surprised if PhotoBucket blocked attempts like this and it because a cat-and-mouse game between PB and extension developers.
I browse car forums and build threads fairly heavily and this was killing me. So often I'm finding someone posted a picture five years ago of the exact information I was looking for, but the image was dead due to Photobucket.

Nothing in the world is worth $5/mo. just to post silly GIFs.

What are some other use cases of PB?

I don't know whether Flickr has been worth using for a while now. Every link I get to Flickr gets me to a page with (usually) the picture I thought I was going to - plus a lot of background stuff that doesn't seem to be super good for the person using Flickr to begin with.
I remember when Imageshack was a thing. I used them quite a bit, but they started "curating" (or commenting) my pictures, so I left. That's the feel I get with Flickr.
Now I should point out that I've never heard of smugmug until now, so I don't know how they might compare. At least it doesn't look like they're going to charge out the wazoo for using their photo hosting service to...host photos.

I have a Flickr account since I have a Yahoo email account. It was free to upload and host pictures. Will there be a fee now?
They have(had?) a Mac OS app to auto backup your iPhoto library. It had a free trial, then a fee to continue use. I used it during the free trial to upload my iPhoto library. It took over a day with my old DSL connnection (896K upload speed). I don’t know if it still has a fee, I haven’t checked yet. I did look at the iPad app. It has auto upload, no mention of a fee. It says I have 1TB of free storage.
I haven’t tried using the Flickr function in iPhoto to upload albums, just individual photos for posting here. Anyone here used it to upload albums or backup their library?

It says they will keep the free plans, but not sure how long. I never used it to back up iphoto, only to upload certain albums and pix.
I pay for it but really don't need to.
