I have had a user named 'Other' (at login) for a long time and I need to get rid of it - it's very irretating. It does not appear in my users in System Prefs. Any solutions. Running Tiger. Ed

Did you enable the Root user at any point? That will cause "Other..." to appear. (Other is not the name of a user: it simply sends you to a manual login as opposed to choosing from a list.)

And if it doesn't go away by disabling the Root user, there are utilities that will let you remove "Other..." from the list.

Oh, and please read the forum descriptions so that you post things in the correct place in the future -- this thread does not discuss Power Macs at all, and thus did not belong there.

At the login screen:

1) Hit the left key (just for the purpose of selecting a user)
2) Hit option-enter

I think this takes the cake for Thread That Made Me Fall Off My Chair Laughing Uncontrollably Award.

I know this seems bad and this is probably a new mac user, but i've never seen someone ask such a seemingly stupid question before -- and i've been browsing MNN Forums awhile......Not only was this thread initially posted in the wrong forum, but what possible harm could "Other" being listed cause??

Kudos to you. This award goes front and center of my fireplace.
I finally got my head together, and my body fell apart.

it's very irritating
I had this same problem once, and its clear he wasn't "afraid" of it. Just didn't want it there. Take it easy on the guy.

You're nuts. This is a valid question, even if the OP posted in the wrong forum.

I have other... and "sshd Privi...eperation" on my login window. The other... appeared when it came back from the apple repair center. sshd appeared when I installed Tiger. I tried the arrow/ option-enter combo and all that did was take me to the window where you have to type in user name and password. Anyone know how to get rid of them? Thanks!

One possibility is if you've enabled Directory Access for connecting to a Domain Controller. It'll add an "Other" account.

Open up the Directory Access utility (in the Utilities folder) and check to see if Active Directory is turned on. If it is, turn it off and restart.

To get rid of the "Other" user from the login window activate and then deactivate the root user. This is done as an administrator from Netinfo Manager from the Security menu
