Weird issue.

No problems with the machine reading DVD's or CD's, just commercial audio CD's. Doesn't even display in disk utility.

It's possible I am running 10.4, but that cannot be verified.

Help?

Have you tried a number of different CDs? Are you certain this isn't some newfangled CD with bizarre mac-unfriendly copy protection on it?

I had this happen with one of my computers. The problem is one of the Filesystems got screwed up.
  1. Backup your computer. I will tell you what I did to fix the problem, but if something goes wrong, I am not liable for it.
  2. If you ignored step one, then go back and do it. Seriously you should backup up your computer before doing this.
  3. Go into /System/Library/Filesystems and remove the cddafs.fs folder (you'll need to be root to do this)
  4. Finally, run the 10.3 combo updater.

That fixed the problem for me. Good luck.

I solved it via a reset of the PRAM. Troubleshooting 101.

Thanks!

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.]
