I met him about a decade or so ago. At the time he was a bitter old man. (Not much fun). I actually thought he was a bit nasty at the time also. (Very disappointing.)
That said: We've lost a key figure in American culture. It is a sad day.

Evidently, he was pretty ill over the last few years.
I met him in 1985 or '86 at a sleepy personal appearance promoting one of the movies, and had a chance to talk to him about things other than the show. He was a genuinely nice guy, then, and had been everywhere and done everything during his life. He was very pragmatic about the fame he gained from the show, and was riding it for all it was worth.

Wow, from abcnews.com:
At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. "The sea was rough," he recalled. "We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans."
The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.

That's really sad. I saw him at a convention when I was in Jr. high school (yes, I was a nerd. I freely admit it), and he was really a cool guy - excellent public speaker, too.

He was always my favourite character from the original series. Actually I didn't like him until he got fat and grew a mustache. I think it is because they made the character more amusing at the same time.

I met him in high school at a convention once. I got him and George Takai to autograph my 1st issue of Star Trek comic too. I still have it sealed in stored away. He's a pretty nice guy, would take the time to make sure everyone got a chance. That line was something else.

I suppose it's a small coincidence that he died on the anniversary of the first man walking on the moon. His TV character will remain one of the greatest in sci-fi. There's wasn't anything he couldn't fix, and no one he couldn't drink under the table.
Sidenote: In the first Star Trek movie, wasn't it a Mac that Scotty was trying to talk to back in the 'past?'

Yup. It's sad to see him get the final beam up from the big man but I'm sure he's in a better place. His character must be one of the most imitated from the Star trek Series.

I met him at Disney World al ong time ago when they were building the Star Trek Ride. He was at the Grand Floridian in the gift shop and I was standing next to him and barely noticed. It took a minute and then I realized who he was. I turned and politely said, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Doohan". He was very polite, and it was strange that nobody else noticed who he was either, but I think he enjoyed that.
Very nice man. Very sad to hear of his passing.

Right thought, wrong movie. It wasn't the first one, it was the fourth one.

Canadians, take solace that you still have William Shatner to call yours.
