Bad opening day for the Sox.

But the cubs spending spree didn't seem to pay off today either. What happened to Zambrano's line in the sand over his contract? Performances like today aren't going to help him negotiate.

The Mets are the team to beat this year. I mean, they have a certain "Special Instructor" that will put them over the top.

Unless the Mets face the team that is managed by the man who use to coach this "Special Instructor".

I think the Yankees are overrated and the Blue Jays are underrated.

I think the AL will be about the Red Sox and Jays...

Hmm, I used to be a big baseball fan, even covered some professional baseball in my time, but it seems that as each year passes, I grow less and less interested in the game. Field of Dreams it no longer is.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Mariners kicked some ass today. Hernandez was awesome. 12 Ks in 8 scoreless innings, only allowing 3 hits?! Clearly we've already won the pennant.

Just the opposite here. I used to watch pro baseball, and root for my favorite team, but didn't really get into it much. However, now that I have a son who loves the sport, loves going to and watching MLB games, and, above all else, loves playing... I find myself getting even more and more drawn in. For me it seems more and more like a Field of Dreams scenerio.

This is going to be a truly historic year. At some point, the Phillies will reach a unique milestone: they will lose their 10,000th game. No other franchise in the history of pro sports has lost that many games!

Padres, baby! Gonna be the cream of the crap in NLWest with another barely .500 season and without Bochy finally get past the first round boot.

Today is the first day of summer for me.
I am off to see if 300 million bought enough for even one win over this series.
I assume it did but that's because our pitching rotation was screwed by the double header this week.

BTW: Milwaukee? What's up with that?
I know its the worst divison in baseball and its only May but I still didn't see them coming.

I heard that the A's might sign RIckey Henderson for one day so he can retire as an Athletic... Bud Selig has no spine... The Giants have the best starting 5 in baseball, and Roger Clemens represents all that wrong with athletes today.
Those are my baseball thoughts.

Luckily you were at least half correct in your assessment. The Jays just can't get it together.

They are only 9 games back now. There are more than 9 weeks left in the season. Nothing is improbable.

Yeah, especially since my Sox are the choke Kings in the late season. I've watched it happen a hundred times.

But I still wouldn't call it a comeback.

I don't know what was with the Mets this month, they just couldn't get it done. The Phillies are going to be exciting to watch when they're not beating up on us.

The Mets have been hesitant to part with their A-list minor league talent in the last few years, but maybe they will this year in order to get a starting pitcher who can go more than six innings and spare the bullpen some. I hear Johann Santana is a bit unhappy up North....

Holliday gets my MVP vote, with Jimmy Rollins as a close second....

Good luck to anyone in the NL, except the Cubs.

For gods sake... someone make sure they don't make it to the World Series.

I'm rooting for Cleveland and the Cubbies to make the World Series. Cleveland has done so well without a huge payroll just working with developing players from their farm system. They don't really have any super all-star players aside from Sabathia and maybe Hafner, they just play really well as a team. I like them, and always root for the underdog! As for the Cubbies, well, they are the Cubbies! They are long overdue.

You're a Cards fan, right? You should be rooting for the Cubbies to win it all. Once that happens, the Cubs instantly lose their identity and become Just Another Team. The Red Sox are not nearly as interesting now as they were when they were Cursed....

Yeah, I'm a Cards fan.

But the problem is that Cubs' fans are so obnoxious as it is and they haven't won the WS in 99 years...

I can't even imagine how obnoxious they would be if they actually won the whole thing.

They can't be any more obnoxious than the Yankee fans, especially now that the Yankees are in the Playoffs and the Mets aren't. I'm glad I don't work with any Yankee fans anymore. I can have a pity party with the Met fans in my office tomorrow morning without hearing abotu how great Joba is....

Is New York wanting Randolph's head, as well as, all the other coaches yet? I'm waiting for the "It was Rickey's fault" article to debut tomorrow AM.

Some people are, no doubt. I don't live in the area anymore so I don't know how much Talk Radio is fuming at him. But there are three things I do know:

1) From his management of the bullpen to his motivation of players (and especially Reyes), there is much about this collapse that traces back to his decisions.

2) But Willie's only in his third year as a manager, and has to be allowed time to grow. Did you know that Joe Torre was arguably the worst manager in Mets history? Who can we find to replace Willie, Art Howe? Willie has done a lot with the talent he's been given by the Front Office.

3) If we're looking to assing blame, Omar Minaya (The GM) is just as responsible. He let Chad Bradford walk to the Orioles, then signed Scott Shoenweis to essentially the same money, who hasn't been nearly as effective, and it showed in the quality of the bullpen. He was a genius last year (Maine and Perez were essentially throw-ins on other trades!), but this year some of the magic is gone.

Can you tell I've been thinking about this some?

(I also heard from my dad that one of the talk radio gentlemen was laying into Rickey this year for playing cards in the clubhouse. Come on, you knew it was coming....)

The Mets collapse, couldn't happen to a better team. Well yes the yankees, but you have to give them their due. They (yankees) pulled it together in the second half of the season. It will be interesting to see if both they and Red Sox meet, provided both get beyond the divisional playoffs. The yankees for the most part seem to have the red sox's number this season but post season can be different. Just look at A-Rod's batting average in the post season these past few years.

The Mets collapse how historic. They were crowned as the NL pennant even before the season began and now they're not even in the playoffs..

Being a long time/long suffering Rockies fan, I wrote the Rocks off at the beginning of the season. They either start strong, get your hopes up and then collapse after the all star game or start slow, turn it on after the all star game after they are too many games down to catch up.
13 innings? What a great game! Better find that bandwagon really quick.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!
