IBM seems to want out of the PC business. What does this mean, if anything for their processor division which supplies chips to Apple? IBM has clearly stated that it wants to be a service and software outfit.

Will that, "Apple should have gone with Intel chips", return again?

Any thoughts or comments?

It really has nothing to do with IBM's processors. IBM has never liked coughing up licensing fees to Microsoft or buying processors from one of their main competitors: Intel. Additionally, margins in the PC business are razor thin, even for IBM. Given the margins that IBM makes on their high-end equipment, they probably just came to feel that their PC business was a nuisance.

And if anything, this only reaffirms IBM's commitment to developing POWER chips.

Eh... I probably should have checked the lounge before moving this. I had forgotten that there was already a thread on this subject.

I think that this is a good thing for Apple. This will allow IBM to concentrate on the PPC processor used by Apple.

No they won't have more people working on the powerpc line of chips, they will have massive layoffs in the pc division.

No they won't (at least not initially). That division is being taken over by Lenovo too.

There are always layoffs associated with takeovers, and my point was mostly that ppc development won't go any faster.
