Got the icons and instructions from modmyiphone:

took me a while to understand the paths and commands, I've had to restore my phone twice

changed the homescreen icons and dock
changed the lock icon and the slider arrow, color and text
changed the color of the airplane mode, the wifi signal, service signal, the play icon, the charged battery at top and the TTY icon and the carrier logo to "Saint Huynh"

added a couple of ringtones and re-arranged the homescreen

Not exactly my choice of icons or colors, but interesting proof-of-concept.

I think this is exactly the kind of thing that Steve Jobs is afraid would happen if he gave us full control over the UI.

Showing that to people would probably turn them off to the iPhone. It looks like a jumbled mess.

But congrats on actually customizing it, I'd be way too scared of bricking my phone.

Wow. How mature.

I really do not like the icons. Honestly. I hope you won't insult my boyfriend as being ugly, fat, toothless and without a brain just because I do not like the icons. It is a very strange assumption to make, you know ... But I see you'd rather have people lie in your face and say, "Oh my gosh, those icons are just sooo .... just sooo ORGASMIC! There. Better now? Have all ugly boyfriends and girlfriends turned into top models now? I SWEAR I had less hair and five pounds more just ten seconds ago. Nice adjustments anyway.

Personal preference is what customization is all about.

Not my cup of tea, but the fact that it can be done to that extent is pretty cool. I hope Apple opens it up and allows us to do this without hacks (since I'm a wuss and too scared to use hacks).

I don't know. It's not that bad. The bottom bar looks very nice. Main area would be a cool (temporary) change of scenery every now and again. The top bar, however, is the iPhone equivalent of a Toyota Corolla with bright orange flame stickers down the side and a disproportionately large spoiler, i.e., tacky.

But, ups for the rest, man. I can dig.

You're right, loveanh, it's subjective, and I subjectively rate it as ugly.

The icons have no uniformity, they look like they were made by 17 different people. The pure yellow/red/blue outlines really clash. Safari is a tap target larger than the phone and the iPod apps. Basically, it all lacks consistently. If I were you, I'd pick a uniform colour scheme and icon style and go from there.

I'm sorry you're getting a lot of criticism, but as an artist, especially an interface designer, you have to learn not to take criticism personally. And since you've exposed your work on a public forum, you have to expect both sides of the coin.

The good thing though, as others have pointed out, is that since it's personal customization of a device, all that matters is that you're satisfied with your own work!

It's cool that this is possible.

Opinion: It's even uglier than this thread. And that's saying a bit.

i'm going to agree with most everyone else here, and say its not my cup of tea, but well done on getting it altogether like that, certainly gives us some hope for the future modding of the iPhone.

But it really is a shame that it looks like some kind of crappy Linux distro

Looks horrible, but cool that you were able to change it.
My suggestion from pictures would be could you scale some of the icons back and bit? That might give you a bit cleaner look and feel.

I used the icons from various themes. It was my first attempt, just wanted to see if I could do it.

Kinda tired of the criticism, if anyone can do a better job by all means do it and post your pics. No need to keep telling me how ugly it is, I've heard enough.

It's easy to sit back and cast stones, let's see someone else mod their iPhones.

If you can read, most people here are saying the actual modding of the iPhone is great. But did you honestly think a group of people that love Apple's simplicity when it comes to design would like something as busy and jumbled as that???

All glory to the hypnotoad.

See, the thing about posting something like this is you're going to get criticized. Thats part of the process. You did something creative and something that changes the user interface of a device. People have opinions on what they think looks good and what doesn't. And this being the Internet, you're going to get people who tell you their opinions with anonymity. If you're not ready for some sharp criticism, don't post things like this.

But as jokell82 said, a lot of people in here were respectful about it and offered support as well as criticism. Don't get offended, just take the advice and do with it what you will.

And if you are in any sort of creative type of work or schooling, you better get used to people telling you your stuff sucks. I deal with it every day. You have to learn how to not take it personally and use the criticism to your advantage.

Don't take it too hard, man (girl?). Like I said before, I like it for the most part. Half the folks on this forum scour the threads for opportunities to trash anything and everything. Like you implied, I'd like to see them do any better!

And it happened anyway. So it would have been no disadvantage to have things a little more open
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Apple can release an update that squashes all of this hacking. Sure, you can just not update.. but for how long?

hacking the iPhone is not hard or dangerous. You download and install jailbreak, connect iphone and click the button. Done. Changing icons is then just a matter of swapping files. No big deal. Its been done by many people.
