Are you running X or a Classic OS? If both, where do you spend most of your time?

Once I got my iBook 600 DVD a month ago, I re-formatted the HD into 3 partitions (OS X, OS 9, and documents). After installing Mac OS X and my documents, I have not yet installed OS 9 yet. So, full time OS X. (384 MB RAM, 15 GB HD)

I use 10.1.3 full time. OS9 is installed on a separate partition (just in case), but I never use it anymore.

X. I never use 9 anymore. I don't use any apps that depend on it. Drives me crazy now to go to the computer lab and have to use 9. 10.1.3 is very useable on my 600 w 384 Mb RAM, just the finder is slow sometimes.

10.1.3 full time usually but it's still sluggish. I only have 256mb of ram though. I'm waiting for damn prices to drop again so I can pump it up to 640mb.

OS X 90%, Classic "environment" 5%, Classic native 5%...
I hate Classic. But I have to use it occasionally for Photoshop and Illustrator...

I have booted OSX since the day I got the iBook. I have OS9 installed just in case, and I do boot the classic environment once a month or so to run Photoshop (I use Classic a little more often on my G4 desktop). I am a UNIX junkie from awy back, so OSX is perfect for me.

Well, based on this informal poll, it would appear that iBook users appear to be among the most progressive of Apple's customers. Course, iMac, PB, and PowerMac users might disagree.

But hey, its hard to argue with 13 of us, so far, all using X full-time, with not a single respondent using 9 for more than 5% of their time.

OS 9.2. I'm not adopting OS X until I get a G4 laptop of some kind. I'm getting used to it by running it on my external hard drive.

Well, for most of my work/play/reading, I'm in OS X (10.1.3 at the moment) and use classic to run Photoshop and Illustrator. Sometimes I check out a browser that needs classic to run, but I spend most of my time in OS X. Rarely do I boot up in 9 unless I want to check to see if a specific program or device works there when it doesn't work in Clasic.

9.2 - 99.9%
X- 'nuff said

When apple deign to put some real energy saving features into x - then maybe i'll change , but it does seem as if x requires plenty of oomph just to work- something the ibook just ain't got..its a desktop os at the mo'

iBook/600 Combo, 384 MB RAM

3 Partitions, MacOS 9.2 ONLY

(i've got way too much classic stuff going to bother me with X as yet. (graphic/typo/web-design))

(this does not mean that i don't think that X is good, it's just not the right tool for me right now. remember: "never change a working configuration")

ONLY OS 9 - As someone that makes a living going graphic design, I can't afford to be using OS X - very little of the programs that I use are OS X native. I am waiting for Photoshop and Quark Xpress.

After I got Office v.X I have been 100% OS X on my iBook 500/384/10GB. No OS 9 at all.

iBook 500 MHz w/ 256 RAM...

I boot into X for games, music, surfing the web, and Microsoft Office.

I boot into 9 for photoshop, dreamweaver and any other resource-intensive task.

I like the look of X, but prefer 9's faster response time and window manager.

I got my IBook 600Mhz 2weeks ago, deleted 9 as soon as I got it X is just too pretty =)

OS X 100% Although somethings are really really slow even with 384MB of Ram, Will 640 improve the speed?

Well...

I am new to the Mac, and though it would be nice if I would start out using Classic, for a few months. I figured that if I am ever to understand where Apple is going in the future, I should do as much as I can to familiarize myself with where they have been...

That and I am using Always Off Line's Version 7.0 - 45 day trial, and it doesn't work in OS X, even in the Classic enviorment.

In 10.1.3 99% of the time. Only go back to 9.2 when i have to. I hesitated to try X when I first got my ibook, but now, i can't go back.

Old school iBook Indigo 366 here.

Use Mac OS X full time, and yes it works well.

I only use Mac OS 9 to install older apps.

I have never used anything but OS X. I had to install (or was too excited when my iBook arrived to think about trying something else) OS 9 from the original software CDs, but straight away reinstalled OS X by itself.

Given enough time I will probably give Debain GNU/Linux PPC a shot aswell.

OS X All the way baby! I do have a OS9 partition, but I am seriously considering clearing off the system totally to make room for more apps and A/V files.

os X 99.5% of the time.

reboot into os 9 native to use my sandisk smart media reader.

ibook 600 384MB ram.

while os x is noticeably slower, i have yet to restart my ibook because of a crash. the stability more than makes up for the speed hit, imho.

I use 10.1.3 for everything...with a few exceptions:

- Deus Ex (will someone PLEASE port it!)
- the classic Mac game, Spectre Challenger (check it out)
- Unreal Tournament (UT X b2 doesn't run that well under X)
- Photoshop 6 to scan stuff (Canon hasn't released drivers for X yet)

I partitioned the 20GB drive into three volumes, installed 9.2 on two and left the 2GB volume empty to use as a scratch/CD burning space.

My main reasons for doing this? I use a number of apps that require an upgrade to run natively in OS X, and I prefer to let others be at the vanguard of exploring OS X.

Heck, I'm still running 8.6 on my office Mac so I suppose that I am a real Luddite when it comes to operating systems. But I am playing with 9.1 on the office Mac so that file sharing will hopefully work better; the subtle difference in how 8.6 and 9x deals with file sharing causes me some headaches...

I also cannot use my current security program (DiskLock) with OS X, and since the iBook will have sensitive material on it (e-mail, passwords, etc...) I want to able to easily encrypt and lock the sucker.

I am meandering through David Pogue's "The Missing Manual" and if I am really inspired to play with X I can always use the iMac for that.

I use OS9 100%.
I had OSX installed for some time, but it was too slow in my iBook 500.
Other reasons:
I bought Office 2001 a few months ago. No desire to spend more money in Office X.
Quake III
Unreal
Battery life in OS9
OS9 is more mature
I like OS9

I have an iBook 466 SE FW...it was OS 9 only when I bought it. I tried to be an "early adopter" and tried 10.0 - HATED IT!!! I swore I would switch to X when I was very outdated (in a few YEARS). Then 10.1 was announced, I thought, "heck I'll give it a try". So I drove over to my Apple Store in Columbus, OH and bought it the morning it was available. (Actually I had been using it "unofficially" since September - before the release date). Now I have totally deleted ALL OS 9 from the iBook and I dread working on the G4 which has OS 9.2.2. I am a convert! It's MAC OS X for me!!

I understand that 10.1 is MUCH better than 10, and moving to X is inevitable at some point, sooner or later... But I tend to be the last on my block to adopt new technology.

Let others work out the bugs; I want to get stuff done.

Having said that, I do appreciate those who make the initial plunge and pave the way for other users.
