I tried to love O:M2. Really, I did. It has some really strong songs, but the album just doesn't do it for me. I'd have to go with Tool's 10,000 Days. This year's field is on the weak side compared to last year, which had really strong releases from Dream Theater, Kamelot, Epica, Steve Vai, System of a Down, Nevermore, Disturbed...

Sure everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the simple fact this band is full of amazing musicians pretty much makes damn sure they don't suck.

To each his own, but Mars Volta is the best damn rock band to come out since grunge upset hair metal.

I don't see how anyone who likes Muse and ATDI can dislike MV so much as to suggest they shouldn't exist.

Plus, your argument is flawed: you link "amazing musicians" with "not sucking." That's ridiculous. This seems to be the number-one point brought up by everyone I talk to who enjoy them: "but they can play so well! SO?!? Everyone can play well! All you need is some physical skill and determination! I've got at least 3 friends who can play their instruments as well or better than any "professional" musician I've ever heard; one of them likes to rip spot-on renditions of Randy Rhodes or Eric Clapton or John Frusciante solos on his freakin' classical guitar, for cryin' out loud. Amazing musicians are a dime a dozen; the vast majority of them can't write a song for ****. Some of them even become famous, but they still can't write a damn song; ever listen to Joe Satriani? That dude's been making shitty albums for years and years, and people still buy a few because "he's such a great musician OMG!!!" Give me a break.

None of this means good musicians make good songs, or better yet, good albums. The Mars Volta simply does not do that, and have not since the their first disc, the Tremulant EP. Now that was great on potential; it's unfortunate that they haven't been able to put together anything but the occassional good song since then. It's also interesting to note that Tremulant was actually quite focused and its songs didn't meander and masturbate for at least half their length.

The hilarious part is, you equate them with the best things to come out since grunge upset hair metal. Don't you realize that The Mars Volta almost exactly symbolize the wank-fest albums and bombastic musicality that made "hair metal" so hideous to the alternative scene of the late 80s?!?

I also find it amazing that you don't recognize the difference between At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta. They're as different from one another as they could possibly be. There's a reason why AtDI had to split into two groups, you know; they were different enough that individual tastes simply couldn't be reconciled.

And I imagine I appreciate new and exciting music as much or more than the next guy. The Mars Volta aren't it.

Wow, that was long reply. But yeah Mars Volta still kicks major ass, and their concert at Lupos was the best show I've ever seen. To compare them to vapid empty hair metal is beyond me, but being a prog-rock band ain't easy.

You are entitled to your opinion, but you might wanna back off a bit when stating it as fact.

The real fact is the Mars Volta have a cult following, and are not going away anytime soon. In fact, I love how most people hate them, the majority sucks when it comes to art anyways.

Also, where did I say that AtDI is the same as Mars Volta? I'll give you a hint, I didn't. I mearly stated that to like bands such as AtDI and Muse would almost garauntee at least respecting TMV. Oh well, I guess that is just the scene I hang around.

Finally greg, what is your favorite band right now? I'd like a chance to sh*t all over your parade. Not really, but I hope you see what I'm getting at.

Whether or not a band sucks is simply personal preference.

I don't know why you people are getting all aggressive about it. I don't like quite a few bands, but if they're accomplished musicians, I wouldn't say that they suck. MV did not make it to the top of my list this year, but it's a damn good CD. Frances the Mute didn't do much for me though. I don't like horns.

Which is what got me flustered in the first place. I don't like Phish, I would never see a Phish show...but I don't nearly have enough gall to say they "suck"

2005 was an awesome year for new music, but 2006 is quickly catching up.

The Decemberists' newest album, The Crane Wife, is quickly becoming my favorite album of the year.

And hate on me all you want, but I really like Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds. It's a nice step forward from his previous, rather bland work and even his single 'SexyBack' shows more creativity and artistry than 99% of the tunes found on the radio these days.

Well I can rarely narrow my favourite music down to a single band - hell, I agonize for hours over my top 5

- but I would say that ISIS is probably my overall favourite band at the moment. And good luck shitting on ISIS - they will break your bones with majestic thunder!

The Loon was 2005, or else it would've been on my list, too. Good call on The Crane Wife, though. Forgot about that one. Not quite as catchy as their first two albums, but a better production overall.
