The best way to get rid of them is to not try. Let them come; they will burn out soon. Give them an opportunity to prove their idiocy to the public and they will do it every time, 100% guaranteed. Let people see their stupidity, and their numbers will dwindle naturally.
It is a much slower process than simply trying to legislate them out of existence, but it works. Trying to crush them through law only breeds more of the resentment on which hate feeds.
spot on!

These people are Americans. Don't expect anything meaningful or... uh... normalcy...

Ditto.
Educate instead of trying to force a lid on this.

ALERT! ALERT!
"Let them come; they will burn out soon. Give them an opportunity to prove their idiocy to the public."
This is exactly what von Papen thought. Let him try and prove his ineptness. While Hitler did prove to be inept, it turned into a very horrible experiment.
While this indeed works often enough (DVU, Schill-Partei) it is a very very risky thing to do.

Von Papen had a conservative (undemocratic) agenda of his own.
Even when you say it's risky, it's the only way to eliminate its influence permanently -- just compare your grandparents' generation points of views (e. g. in the states about blacks or about women) with your own.

Short form (how do I format a post for BIG, EASY TO READ TYPE? ):
Letting them run freely in hopes that their own idiocy will cause them to fizzle out is dangerous. People (among them von Papen) once suggested the same approach to Hitler.
(The DVU and Schill-Partei are two German right-wing political parties in recent history that successfully all but eradicated themselves from the political landscape simply by actually being given the chance to prove themselves total idiots.)

So Germans gather in France in Neonazis celebration and that should be France's fault, for letting them expressing their stupid ideas? You heard about freedom of expression in your little country?
