I dont think it did this before - I installed the 10.2.1 update, and after I launched iCal, then quit, the dock icon did not go back to JUL 14 or whatever. It stays on the current date (SEP 19). I dont know what happens after a day passes though... But this is something new. Anyone want to investigate?

It was like this for me in 10.2. I wish it would check on startup.
I guess you set it as a login item would be the way to have a date in your dock.

The icon sometimes does change to the original date. The fact that it doesn't change is actually a bug; applications have no control over their dock icon when they're not running. Te expected behaviour as per the documentation is that the dock tile should return to its original state when the application has quit.

Maybe if there was an iCal daemon running somewhere in the background?

There is a dmon (iCal Helper) but that can't change iCal's dock tile. No such API exists.

Damn..with a subject like that, I started to get excited that the something new that iCal does is...actually go fast, or something.

Maybe you just think there is no API...

I left my iCal on overnight, but the icon date didn't change. I guess it only updates when its launched.

There may not be an API to change the dock icon of another application. But Apple could write iCal helper to always run and show its icon in the dock. When clicked on, iCal helper just passes the proper command (launch, or quit, or come to the front) to iCal which could be running in the background with its icon hidden.

Could be done, but I can't see a way to get rid of the 'application running' triangle when iCal is not actually open.

That sounds like an ungainly way to get it done anyway.
