For all the translucent menubar haters:

To change the menu-bar to a grayish-tone similar to when using Pro apps in Leopard:
[CODEX]sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 0[/CODEX]

For a White Menu-bar ala Tiger
[CODEX]sudo defaults write /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables' -dict 'CI_NO_BACKGROUND_IMAGE' 1[/CODEX]

To get the translucency back:
[CODEX]sudo defaults delete /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.WindowServer 'EnvironmentVariables'[/CODEX]

I had to restart to get this to work. I'm not sure if a Logout will work. Hope this helps!

Do you mind posting screenshots of the white and grayish versions?

That's awesome. The grey version is exactly what I wanted. Now my iBook (that originally got the translucent menu bar) can match my G5.

Has anyone put together a pref pane or app that will allow them to be switched via gui?

Mac Pilot (shareware$19.95) supports this. It's easy to use, works as advertised, and AFAIK, is problem free. Mac Pilot - Enable Hidden Features and Optimize Your System

Thanks for the reminder and the code. The translucent menu bar was awful in so many ways.
