I was just reading David Hyatt's weblog wishing I could get my hands on a new version. Wow, I can't believe Apple has already released an update.

Does anyone else have a netscape.net e-mail account? I can't log into netscape with this current version of Safari or the previous. I saw some people had issues with hotmail while others did not and I want to be certain it's not just me with netscape.net.

This release is just to fix the freaky "let's delete random stuff" bugs. That's it.

If you concentrate hard enough though, you can probably add tabs to the toolbar.

Wonder if these fixed the flash bugs.

I tried staring at the toolbar for a long time, using my mind powers to create tab browsing. All I got was screen burn in on my cornea.

Is the Flash bug fixed? It seems faster to me but it's probably the placebo effect.

I was having that problem even before v51. Can you mount the iCal 1.0.2 image, even if d/l'd via another browser? I couldn't. Fix permissions didn't help.

Tabs are stupid.

I can't believe people are making such a big deal about the stupidest little thing...

it just won't go away and it's killing me
I saw more people say that they wouldn't use it because it didn't have tabs then i did because it might delete their home directory.

"Oh who cares that Safari might overwrite my Home folder.. the damn thing doesn't have tags!!!"

Uh oh. Have you checked software update recently? About the same time as those issues started happening, I got an "unexpected error" when trying software update. Also had general issues with installing anything that required an admin password.

It's not so much that Tabs are stupid, but that some people are so hardlined to treat them as the make-or-break feature of Safari *regardless of other merits*. People seem to forget that we were all happily browsing away not a year ago, nary a Tab in site.

I just love tabs. That's all. It isn't that I do not see the rest of the positive features of Safari, but tabs would be very nice. You don't have to use them, but you can.

Check to see if /tmp still exists. I think one of the problems with Safari was that in some rare cases it deleted the /tmp symbolic link.

I think Apple is cursing me for being dissatisfied with Safari -(

Good points. I was introduced to tabs with Chimera 0.6 I and I took a liking to them pretty quick. But for me they are not a "must have or won't bother using it" type feature. But I would say that Apple would really want to add them down the road, considering how much enthusiasm there seems to be for them. It's just not a priority for the audience Safari is geared towards.

Just type the following into Terminal:

Code:
ln -s /private/tmp/ /tmp

Start up Terminal
1. cd /
2. ls -l

Look to see if there is a 'tmp -> private/tmp'

if not

1. sudo ln -s private/tmp tmp

The /tmp symbolic link to /private/tmp. See the above post to fix.

Yeah, sadly, it looks like the same thing happened to you.

My links don't show recently bwosed in a different color either. I'm not sure if that is part of the same problem, as I've fixed the other stuff and that problem is still the same.

I actually panicked and reinstalled everything. If I would have known for sure that it was related to Safari I probably would have waited it out for a more sensible solution.

I believe you have to be root to do this, so a sudo may be in order:

sudo ln -s /private/tmp /tmp
(then your password)

See for more.this slashdot thread.

Also, can someone confirm that the "delete your home directory" bug is fixed?

apparently, it fixes the /tmp bug and recreates the symbolic link (if it's missing).

Actually, you just need to be an admin. But a sudo won't hurt.

I've downloaded the new safari:

FLASH IS A H*LL OF A LOT FAST! YES!!! SMOOTHEST FLASH YET I SEEN ON MAC! AS GOOD AS PC!!! YES!!!

Less crashy, much better. I can actually use this thing now.

No differences other than that I can see. Thanks apple!

People have been wondering about the Flash bugs and such. At least some of these should be fixed in this update (I'm still downloading so I'm not certain). Dave Hyatt's blog has stated that some of these are fixed in WebCore, and I would imagine that this update probably uses the latest WebCore.

The Flash bug wasn't in WebCore (it was in Safari itself), but it was supposedly fixed on Wednesday. So it should be in.

Speaking of WebCore, it's possible to rip out Safari's engine and run a custom one, essentially letting you download custom WebCores on a weekly basis or so and get the updates. It's not quite the same as Chimera nightlies (since you can only get updates to the rendering engine, not the whole browser) but it should be great for fixing rendering bugs. This Slashdot article will tell you how it's done.

Would this allow someone to run a different engine under Safari, such as Gecko? Or does webcore just work on top of the Khtml stuff?

That site works fine for me too. G4/450.

I have to say that while I don't know if the "delete the home folder" bug is real or not, it seems that it is an isolated incident that had been retold EVERYWHERE.

I know some people are still getting used to X, but there are a lot of 's that do dumb things like, run in root 24/7. So while the bug could possibly be real, personally, I suspect user error.

As for tabs, I use them in Chimera. I find them incredibly useful, as I often have a few browser windows open and tabs make navigation extremely easy for me. I am more efficient with tabs. When I would prefer is to have tabs available as an option, in the preferences, maybe. Something like that. Those that want them, turn them on. Those that don't, can spawn new windows to their heart's content.

Great. Apple hates me.

On the other hand, webpage scrolling is surprisingly smooth, even faster than a current iMac or iBook.

Edit:

Okay, i checked it out again and I can see maybe that site's performance isn't that unusable.

Try this site instead:
http://users.design.ucla.edu/~zai/photos/

And see if the flash animation on the top left works smoothly. Thanks.

(And I agree... the sushi is making me very hungry also)
