Anyone here use Ragtime? I remember trying it out *way* back in the Sys7 days. Well I got my copy of MacTech today and they had an ad and the comment that it was free for non-commercial use. It looks similar to KOffice in many ways but is Aqua native.

The problem is that the link to download it doesn't work. (www.ragtime-online.com) Going to the main site ( www.comgrafix.com ) shows an other download link for a beta, but that doesn't work either.

Anyone try this or know anything about it? Looking at the pallets it doesn't look nearly as elegant as say OmniGraffle. However it is interesting as a Word/Appleworks replacement. Especially if it is free.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but here's the MacUpdate page with the d/l links:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9792

All 3 of the links worked for me.

I used the old OS 9 version too and found it to be pretty good. Have to wait and see though, OpenOffice looks to be promising and is free too.

The version from MacUpdate is the demo for version 5 which times out. Unfortunately it has an interface which isn't that clear. (Its toolbar in particular is confusing - a poorly drawn icon of a squirrel brings up a floating pallet for instance)

The original Ragtime *way* back in the day was partially a Pagemaker competitor which then focused more on the office flow. I believe it was always more popular in Europe than in the US. Since it was originally a page layout program, it follows that basic metaphor. That's not a bad thing actually. It gives you more control. As I mentioned KOffice does this as well.

Overall though the interface is far too confusing and cluttered. I'd suggest looking at OmniGraffle for the right way to do the basic approach Ragtime does.

Still, if they ever get the link to version 6 working this will be a legitimate alternative to MS Office. The problem right now is that the "cheap" amongst us have to install X11 and run OpenOffice, KOffice or AbiWord. None of which really are adequate to a true OSX workflow. (Not being able to cut and paste anything other than text being only one of the many limits)

www.ragtime-online.com is online again (nomen est omen), but it doesn't look like the free solo version is available at the moment, just a 99 Euro introductory offer.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Now there is a blurb at the bottom of the ragtime-online page that reads:

" Is there a RagTime Solo for Mac OS X? - Our hopes and expectations for Ragtime Solo were fulfilled. It helped us to make Ragtime better known. This experience will help us to make a decision about Ragtime Solo for Mac OS X. At this time, we have not yet made any decision about RagTime Solo for Mac OS X."

But if you go to the download link there appears to be an active link for solo. I have it coming down now.

BUMMER its an OS9 version.

There is a public beta for OS X (in final candidate stages) downloadable from here at the German website www.ragtime.de (go to the Downloads section and click the link to the Public Beta for OSX in the menubar at the top of the page)

That public beta on the german website is in fact working in english.
That is when you use a english OS X. Ragtime is really cool. It is
professional and not a big, bloated tool for amateurs, like m$ office.

I'm just missing the feature to place a PDF into a document.

Blimey. Ragtime. Now thats a blast from the past. I used to run this on my LCII way back when....

I guess anything that lessens my dependency on M$ is a good thing. I tried Open Office but I find it just too clunky to like.
