Well I'm almost there, how about yourself?

I mean what exactly is stopping anyone from staying inside OS X permanently?

My main 3 excuses for returning to Nineville are:

1) iRez Kritter Webcam, I have emailed them and they tell me drivers X are on the way.
2) Unreal Tournament. I read somewhere that someone is finally bringing this to X.
3) Burning, well Toast Preview 1 worked for pre X.1 and I hear that a 2nd preview version will be available as early as today.

Well that's about it. Wow.

[Oh one more thing I have an Epson 1290 printer. It's a new model I believe, I wonder if anyone knows if I can use this to print in OS Ex/Ten Point One?]

So what are your excuses for booting into 9, let's hear them, including you old timers who just don't want to change and adapt to the 21st Century Hey that was meant to be a joke! @@

.. still no font management, that's a big reason.
I'm webdesigner, i loooove osx 10.1, but i unfortunately can't work and be productive under osx ... i'm really sad, i've the feeling that i'm not gonna work on it before another good 6 months :O((( .. but i really need photoshop, flash, dreamweaver, font management. Working in classic is a pain, buggy, slow ... and i'm on a dual 800 with 1 Go of ram, so .... don't tell i didn't try

by the way 10.1 (G64) is great but i've experienced some annoying bugs with the dock, the HD icons, and another odd thing is that i only have 4 Go left on my osx partition (not much apps installed), what takes so much space ?

One of the biggest reasons for me to continue to use OS 9 as my primary system has been the lack of a driver to support RealPlayer video files on OS X. I generally visit a number of videogame and news websites where streaming video tends to be in RealPlayer format.

Another reason - still no Gameranger on OS X, even though it's coming soon.

Still yet one more - IPNet Sentry. Fantastic virtual firewall that has stopped intruders on my iMac's doorstep many times. No OS X version out yet.

PS... I've already switched to OS X for my mail, newsreading, and IRC but these the above reasons keep my system primarily logged into OS 9.

I'm deciding what to do on my PowerBook.

Mac OS X 10.1 doesn't read the CompactFlash card from my Nikon Coolpix 950 when I put it into the PowerBook's PC-Card slot.

As that is the only way I can get images out of the camera, I'm forced in 9 (this model Coolpix is not USB).

I know I could buy a USB card reader, but that is added bulk and clumsy cables to carry around, and shouldn't be needed when the PowerBook has all the hardware that the transfer needs.

I'm quite disappointed at the omission, actually.

No virtual firewall on OSX ? Mac OSX was born for the internet. Check out Brickhouse on VersionTracker.

* synching my palm
* burning to SCSI CDRW
* scanning with SCSI Jade scanner (although VueScan is *so* close to fixing that!)

oh, does anyone know a smartmedia reader that works in X?

but apart from that I barely even need to boot blue box.

1. Printing (what's it take to get an Epson PHOTO 750 driver anyway?)
2. Unreal Tournament (I hear a Carbonized version is coming)
3. Virtual Game Station (dammit; why'd Connectix have to sell out to Sony?)
4. Burning (SCSI CD-R; pleeeeeeeeeeease come through for me Roxio!)

...and that's about it. DivX can now be scratched off the list, and that was the only other one.

Tops for me is the inability to access any of my office servers, through AppleShare or Netware, which is what we support. I have hopes that 10.1 will let me do this since Apple claims it has improved the ability to connect to AFP servers over AppleTalk. I don't trust Novell to ever fix this, either. I honestly don't mind spending time in Classic to run my apps but this is a deal-breaker; I have to access the servers at least a dozen times a day.

I also need native versions of Photoshop, InDesign and GoLive but I know they're coming so I'm not as concerned about that.

I also need to be able to use my external CD-RW but I think Toast 5.1 will take care of that, if support for second-party burners isn't included in 10.1.

1. PhotoShop
2. PhotoShop plug-ins
3. Flash
5. DreamWeaver
6-??? All the many apps I use on a daily basis that dont have an X counterpart.

I dont think most pro-shops will seriously adopt OSX until early summer 2002. IMO

Well, with DVD Player, iDVD, Finder cd burning and a general improvement of everything in 10.1, I'm prettty much all set except for these:

1. Unreal Tournament
2. XClaimTV Player
3. Photoshop/Pagemaker

Also, I'm hoping iTunes finally gets its wide-screen act together. The Classic version supported stretched visualizers; but not the X version.

it is very easy to use the likes of Photoshop and Illustrator in Classic. very very easy with hardly any noticable difference than actually running them raw in 9ville. so what are your ABSOLUTE NECESSARY reasons for going downstairs, counting backwards, downgrading to 9?

Before 10.1 problems:

1) Changing icons on some folders
2) Watching DVDs
3) Some CD-burning issues

After 10.1 problems:

1) Virtual PC (need my fullscreen mode!)

Hmm:
- Can use outlook client in classic
- can use all productivity apps in classic (photoshop, dreamweaver, office 2001 etc)
- will be able to connect to windows shares okay? (we'll see)

Sooo ... no Jade2 SCSI support (anyone know if SCSI/firewire/usb converters are any good?), and no Epson 1200 support (but I expect Epson will get it's act into gear soon).

Yeah, it's basically peripherals that'll keep me from OS X.1 all day every day.

...

... But my _co-workers_ don't have peripherals ... *bwah ha ha*

its getting there....

1) Palm Desktop
2) Macromedia Flash
3) Office v.X
4) Eudora (non beta)
5) Ability to read compact flash on the PCCard slot
6) Adaptec SCSI spport for the 1480 PCCard (COME ON ADAPTEC!)
7) SCSI CD-RW support
8) Power management & hardware support for my TiPB (IrDA)
9) Unix Network backup client ported with mac resource fork support - have you tried using tar to a remote host and then restoring - what a waste of time that was, what the hell are resource forks anyway ?

My bugfix / osX feature wishlist (in no particular order)

1) IE needs to read the network settings panel for secure proxy settings when using location manager
2) Location manager needs to store different settings for Monitor arrangement, NTP server and probably some other things I can't think ok.
3) Login box needs the option to select a location
4) "You don't have permission to...." needs a lock / enter admin password override as default
5) SMB client needs to store my userid / password (maybe via control panel like login save password options) and authenticate automatically when I connect to an SMB server
6) TCP wrappers & firewall need a control panel "internet security" allowing me to drag services into the hosts allow and deny files, and enter IP addresses into the firewall
7) Anonymous FTP user option needs to be correctly configured by default, with at least a user and group ID pre-set
8) /etc/services and netinfo need updating to newer version
9) local caching nameserver would be awesome - I have BIND running locally.
10) PAM support. Oh Boy, that would be a big one.
11) IPSec kernel support in darwin

probably more. Those are just off the top of my head...

COST is the main issue:

OS X $129
Virtual PC ?
Charismac Anubis ?
Font Reserve ?
Norton Utilities ?
Retrospect ?
Microsoft Office $149 (or run it in Classic)
Vectorworks ?
Quark ? (or run it in Classic)

etc.

Audio software, mostly.

1 Reason, my love.
2 Cubase
3 Unreal Tournament (TO, too)
4 And yes, our Epson Photo 750. (Epson's site sucks, there's no way to send feedback or even figure out an email adress...)

But, Photoshop, my primary app after Mail, feels so good in Classic that I keep forgetting I'm running it through 10.1.
That's sweet.

I'd agree that it's getting there. And hopefully 10.1 will take me that much further. Right now having resolved some network issues, I'm running 10.0.4 almost full time at work (on a dual 800/ 512 which pretty much takes care of performance issues).

what makes me boot back (or want to boot back) into 9.2?

SCSI card support (Hello OrangeMicro!!!)

SCSI device support: Umax scanner (old and perhaps could be replaced by a USB model, but still), Iomega SCSI drives, SCSI CD-R burning

Proper Java support (for instance the toronto public library catalog at http://tplwpac.tpl.toronto.on.ca which crashes all the time using I.E. in OS X or applet runner but not in OS 9. Or try http://www.sodaplay.com)
&*^@!! permissions: I download a folder from an ftp site, but can't open it from my desktop because i don't have enough permissions, until I manually set them. What's up with that?

Locking and unlocking files on a (win2K) network volume: I locked them in OS 9, but I can't unlock them in OS X because I don't own them (?) Locking is supposed to be a safety feature, not a security feature. Grrrr...

Buggy Classic: If I drag and drop within Director 8, but drag over the OS X desktop, Director (and often all of Classic) will crash and burn.

That's it for now... but I'm making the best of it, and do prefer it in many ways. Hoping of course for improvements in 10.1.

SOFTWARE BASE STATION

That's the number one reason for me. I use my G4 tower as SBS for my iBook. The iBook, booted into 10.1, and the tower in 9.2, works fine. But with both in 10.1 it doesn't work at all.

UGH!

Until then...I'm a classic man.

2. VCD's (which I griped about yesterday)
3. SWF in IE (not the embedded stuff - but straight .swf files don't work ... go figure!!!)

Um - got to admit - I use my Macs for pleasure - I suffer on Win 98 (no really) at work.... AutoCAD (man that program sucks) mainly - but the connectix ACAD Demo at NY made me sit and go "alright"...

1. Pro Audio/Midi harware and software
2. SCSI Support
3. 10.1 (5G64) is amazing, but there are still some really weird bugs.
Bugs Like:
-Still a few problems copying/pasting between classic and OSX
-Strange thing when copying files between finder windows, sometimes the finder windows totally disappear, the desktop resets, and rearranges icons on the desktop. It's pretty messed up when it happens and scares me every time.

The speed is wonderful though 8-)

For me OS X is still necessary for:

1 Font managing, but Suitcase 10 for OS X is (already?) out
2 Banking software

All the rest, including apps, are running under OS X. I don't use them very intensively, so it's enough for me.

8 reasons for me and my workarounds to avoid booting into OS 9.

1. WebCam (gonna have to stick it on my PC)
2. Final Cut Pro (iMovie will be my substitute for simple movies)
3. UMAX 3400 scanner (again gonna have to use my PC)
4. Watching DVDs (the 10.1 player doesn't support my Yosemite model so I'll just watch it on TV)
5. Virtual PC (beta's coming out soon, so I guess I'll just use my real PC )
6. Skyline drivers (for my PowerBook, gonna have to use ethernet cables)
7. OrangeMicro FireLink drivers (I'll just use my Mac desktop instead)
8. Virtual Game Station (no alternative expect to buy a Game Station)

I think Final Cut Pro is probably the biggest reason for me to have to boot into OS 9.

I work at a school district, where we have been waiting for support to Novell File Servers and that was always our big problem.

Well thank God, Novell has finally release NFAS (Native File Access Services) where you do not need a client (using AFP or Native Windown) to connect to their servers.

That is good news for me. Installed NFAS today and connected with my OSX box (even 10.0). So this weekend I will be driving to my local Apple Store (Mall of America), picking up a CD and start installing OSX in our first school.

A district of 4000 Mac's (all G3's) and I can't wait. We have been purchasing memory like its going out of style recently, just for this day...

Got to love it!

well, at home i still use classic for photoshop and printing and stuff,

but my only reason left to reboot to 9 is in my signature...(except for some toast-only cd formats (10.1 broke the toast preview))

at work, it'll be a slower road. i am one of 2 current os x users (it's in the systems department only at this point).

1. No Palm desktop support
2. No SCSI scanner support
3. No SCSI CD-R support
4. No serial printing support (I'm on a beige G3 w/no USB) - CAN'T PRINT!
5. No Canon S-100 digital camera support
6. No Photoshop
7. No Retrospect (also see #3)
8. No Lexar media CompactFlash reader support

Oh, yeah, sure - we are *real* close to not needing OS 9

What keeps me from the beautiful, modern OS? Anything MIDI and Digital Audio. I can't get a straight answer from any professional music app company. I need Finale and Digital Performer. After that it's OSX all the way.

N.F.W. , Thoth is a bit lame right now. MT-Newswatcher is the BBEdit of newsreaders.
Thoth is like frontpage or something. I try it every few months.... if you protest enough, I'll try it one more time. But the MT-newswatcher guy(SimonFraser?) is supposedly carbonising it and I'm pretty sure it'll be functional out of the gate. Maybe your thinking of the original Newswatcher or YA-Newswatcher(isn't this thoth?). Multi-threaded Newswatcher is the one to beat.

[wow I thought all the threads had gone forever, what happened?]

anyways Unreal Tournament came out for OS X yesterday. 1st preview release and I have to say it's good but not good enough to keep me out of OS 9.

having said that, apart from times like having to reboot into 9 I have found myself in OS X.1 all weekend now!! It's great! Multitasking rules! It ain't perfect but if that's true then comparing to 9dom makes OS 9ine far less immaculate.

3. Photoshop (i'll settle for Fireworks, at least)
4. Fireworks
5. Office (I know.. November - but at least we have a date and Word is already "out"
6. PC Card support for my CF Card (I don't like to hook up my Canon s-100 over USB even though it's supported - think batteries and you'll understand). But I will try it and if rotating and resizing are of GOOD QUALITY then I will become a convert.
7. Quicken for X (someone pls post on carracho)
8. Mainstream Games (don't play games very often so this is lowest priority for ME but probably highest for regular users (i.e. not web developers))

1. Printing, printing, and more printing! To Judge_Fire and any one else who wants to help light a fire under Epson; here's an e-maill addy for them; [email protected]. He's a VP of Marketing, and the one I sent an e-mail to a couple of months ago. Got his name out of a news article, made up the addy, and I received the response listing the printers that Epson "hopes" to provide support for under OS 10.1! Now that 10.1 is out, we need to remind them that we "hope" they get in gear! I have a Photo 870, which is a little over a year old, and does a fantastic job on photos, and I really don't want to replace it just yet. Besides, none of the four-color HPs, etc., do a good job at photo work!
2. Toast. (I know, it's being worked on)
3. Photoshop. (I know; you can run it in Classic, but why add an extra layer to the process?)
4. Intellimouse support! I know; MS sucks, but they do have some good stuff!
5.
Printing, printing, printing!
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Please elaborate on why you don't have a problem in that department?

I have 1,000s of fonts and I need a way to easily turn them on and off, preview, search, group, auto activate missing fonts, etc.. I hear suitcase is coming, though I prefer atm. What are you using?

No support for my Sony Spressa USB burner under X. This perplexes me, because in Public Beta, it would at least recognize it as a Mass Storage device and let me read Cds. 10.1 sees it in Apple System Profilers, but that's it. Otherwise, I'm sitting pretty good.[/LIST]
