I'll be in San Francisco until early June (just arrived today from Toronto via LA). Staying with some friends but there will be a few days I'll need to entertain myself. Any suggestions for the lonelyplanetless traveler?

I'm going to Inverness tomorrow for a wedding. Besides that I have no idea about my plans.

Suggestions are most welcome!
Yose.

No matter where you go, make sure to always have a pullover in your backpack, the weather can change quickly, it always came in handy when the wind picked up.

There were some good suggestions in this thread. Using them I had a good few days.

If you haven't seen Alcatraz you might do that since it's pretty interesting and you get a nice view of the Bay Area from the island.

San Francisco to Scotland for a wedding? Now that’s what I call an enthusiastic guest.

Oh, and don't call The City `San Fran,' the locals don't like it.

Interesting. A distant relative of mine lived there many years. He referred to it as "San Fran" as well. Maybe he never liked living there...

I posted it in the last thread about visiting S.F. but it was so cool, I'll mention it here:

Make sure you take a a ride of the famous cable cars, but do so after 7PM, when most of the tourist aren't riding, and make sure you ride via the footboards on the outside. The experience is astounding, the view amazing (make sure you look around at the top of the "hill".)
What, me worry?

Just got back form a 6-day vacation there.

Go eat at Uncle Vito's Pizza, and Taylor's Automatic Refresher (at the Ferry Building).

Walk through Chinatown during the day -- it's awesome.

Alcatraz was really cool -- just be sure to get the free audio tour to get the full effect.

Trolly/cable cars are $5 a ride, or $11 for an all day pass. Be sure you're on the right side of the street or they won't stop for you (think NY subway).

If you rent a car, go for a drive just outside the city. Head out across the Golden Gate (but stop for photos/walking) and check out some of the neighboring areas.

Rail's suggestions were all good. Also make sure to have at least one nice seafood dinner.

Muir Woods is a great little trip. Carmel is also a great little shopping town.

'San Fran' is fine. 'Frisco' is the name that locals hate.

I second this. Only based on it coming up very time someone says 'San Fran' or 'Frisco' in relation to going there.

Actually we don't care for either. It's San Francisco or "The City."

The City is New York, even if you're not from there. Anyone who calls Frisco "The City" needs to be slapped with a sack of day-old garlic fries.

Nope. Like the city and the area (probably in my top 10 worldwide) but would never call it "The City". Not even sure that some of the over-the-top, full of pretentiousness and sass folks from Castro District would go around calling it that.

But I could be wrong. And if people do call it "The City", then they should get out more often.

Well, I guess people in and around Des Moines may also refer to it as "The City" but still.

While I was living in the Bay Area, everybody just called it `The City', San Francisco is just too long … I've never heard people call it San Fran.

Having lived in both New York City and San Francisco, I've heard and used "the City" to apply to both. In the Bay Area, the City refers to San Francisco, then there's the East Bay and the Peninsula. San Franciscans hate when people use "Frisco" but I've heard "San Fran" used on occasion.

As for suggestions, I've posted previously in the above mentioned linked thread, so check that. If you have anything more specific you want to do, I'll see if I can make a few more recommendations.
