I have to setup a router on a Verizon DSL system running Windows which will then be used by my older powermac quicksilver dual 800 wirelessly. Here's the deal: I gave my old mac to my sister who wants to get online, but the modem is on another floor in her daughters bedroom. How hard is it going to be to configure a router on a POS dell system running windows? ALSO: can anybody recommend a router that won't cost a fortune and will be easy to set up?

I'm good with macs....windows? not so much.

Thanks in advance.
Bill

If the windows computer has a wireless card in it, the most painless way of setting up what you want is with Airport Express. It is not the cheapest at $99, but it is nearly foolproof to set up. Plus you can share a printer and wirelessly stream music to it to play on a remote stereo. You just hook up the DSL modem to the Airport Express unit, plug in a printer and follow the basic instructions. It is also 802.11n which is VERY fast (if you need that kind of thing).

Windows actually makes a lot of things go pretty smoothly, as long as the computer actually runs. AirPort Express is a good choice for the money, and Railroader is right that it's easy to set up. Other brands are also good choices, but there is a huge advantage for YOU in that you know Macs. You can use the AirPort Admin Utility for Windows to configure any AirPort unit, and the look and feel will help you out a lot.

Make sure you tell us all how it goes!

I have an older airport express and it was the first thing I thought of. BUT the Dell system does not have a wireless card in it. So its going to need to be plugged into the router.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Plug the Dell into the Airport Express, configure the Airport Express with the Utility, then plug the modem into the Airport Express. Kind of a lame, but it works.
