Has anyone used the UK Vodafone dongles?

Do they require specialised software and most importantly does the installer force you for an admin password?

I hate letting applications use escalated privileges unnecessarily

From what I researched, their site mentions 'software provided' for Mac OS X, 10.3.9 or higher, provided on the USB modem stick itself.

Once your Mac has restarted, the USB Stick will no longer

My guess is that it requires an admin password to install, but shouldn't require any additional privileges after installation beyond what you give anything else that runs following an installation.

You'll need the admin password to install the software, but not to actually use the software.

What does the installer do? Does it install kernel extensions? Does it screw with your system or does it just set up a new network interface? I'm curious, because if it's the former it could break with any system update and you'd be at their mercy to update it. If it's the latter, it should be stable across updates and even easy to migrate to another system.

Late reply, sorry. It just adds a new network interface I think. Never seen one cause a problem once it has been installed.
